# Auckland: map, what to do and when to go

In Auckland, downtown is small, and what's worth seeing is spread across the region: volcanic cones, islands, beaches and Ōtara Market. New Zealand's largest city, with nearly a third of the country, sits on an isthmus between two seas and is the largest Polynesian city in the world.

**Auckland: Do you need to take off your shoes when entering a house?**
Yes: taking off your shoes at the door is automatic in New Zealand, even in a rented apartment. On the street the opposite holds, and seeing people barefoot at the supermarket or on the bus is normal.

**Auckland: What's the real risk for visitors?**
The most common problem is car break-ins at trail and beach parking lots, like those at Piha, Karekare, Maungawhau and Mission Bay: don't leave anything visible in the vehicle. The risks that actually kill are natural, like the rip currents on the west coast.
