The Igrejinha da Pampulha is the best-known building of Oscar Niemeyer's ensemble: parabolic concrete vaults, until then used only in hangars, serve as structure and wall at once. The archdiocese refused to consecrate it for years, and worship began only in 1959. Guided visits, of about 40 minutes, run Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. (Fridays until 4 p.m.), subject to the sanctuary's schedule, especially on Saturdays; on Sunday there is a visit outside Mass times (7 a.m., 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.). The shore has a walking and cycling path and links Niemeyer's buildings to the Mineirão and the Parque Ecológico da Pampulha. On the way is the Museu de Arte da Pampulha, the former casino from 1943, with a travertine and glass facade and Burle Marx gardens with sculptures by Ceschiatti, Zamoyski and José Pedrosa. The casino operated until 1946 and became a museum in 1957; today the building is closed for restoration, and the museum holds periodic activities in the gardens.
