# Chicago: map, what to do and when to go

Chicago is flat, and what you come to see is the buildings, because this is where the steel skyscraper was invented, after the fire of 1871. The third largest city in the United States, it grew as a railroad hub and keeps 48 km of lakefront open to the public.
