# Doha: map, what to do and when to go

Doha is the Gulf city of signature museums, from I.M. Pei to Jean Nouvel, with Souq Waqif at its center and the desert an hour's drive away. The capital of Qatar was a pearling village in the 19th century, and gas turned it into a showcase for museums and diplomacy.

## Direct answer
- **Doha: Can you walk between neighborhoods in summer?** No: between June and September, ten minutes in the sun at 1pm is already dangerous, and the long blocks and shadeless roundabouts don't help.
- **Doha: How do you get to Khor Al Adaid, the inland sea?** About 60 km south: an hour on paved roads to Mesaieed, then another 30 to 40 minutes across dunes, strictly in a 4WD with an experienced driver.
- **Doha: What's the currency, and what's it worth in reais?** The currency is the Qatari riyal (QR), pegged to the dollar at QR 3.64 = US$1 since 2001, which makes the exchange rate predictable; in late September 2026, QR 1 was worth about R$1.40.
