# Dubai: map, what to do and when to go

Dubai is a new city of towers, malls and a metro built before there was demand for them: almost nothing is old, and almost everything runs on time. A Persian Gulf emirate of 4.7 million people, nearly nine in ten of them foreigners, it grew out of an inlet dredged in 1961.

**Dubai: Can you walk from one attraction to another?**
On most routes, no: from the Dubai Mall to the Burj Al Arab is about 15 km, and from June to September the temperature tops 40°C with high humidity. Plan your day around the metro, taxis, and climate-controlled walkways, and save walking for early morning or after 8pm.

**Dubai: What's the currency, and how much do things cost?**
The currency is the UAE dirham (AED, written "dhs"), divided into 100 fils and pegged to the US dollar at 3.6725 since 1997: the rate is the same everywhere, because it doesn't change day to day. The most common prices: karak 1 to 2 AED, shawarma 8 to 15, a cafeteria meal with rice 15 to 25, a mall food court 35 to 50, a mid-range restaurant 120 to 200 per person, beer at a hotel bar 35 to 60.

**Dubai: What should you wear off the beach?**
In malls, souks, the metro, and public buildings, cover shoulders and knees; bikinis and swim trunks only on sand and in pools.

**Dubai: Is it safe to walk alone at night?**
Dubai has one of the lowest violent crime rates in the world, with a homicide rate below 0.5 per 100,000 people, and walking alone at night in any neighborhood is routine, including in Naif and Deira at midnight, where the most that usually happens is a phone-case vendor offering their wares.

**Dubai: What is karak chai, and how much does it cost?**
Strong black tea boiled with evaporated milk, cardamom, and plenty of sugar, served in a small glass for 1 to 2 AED at any cafeteria.
