# Edinburgh: map, what to do and when to go

Edinburgh is two cities side by side, split by a valley: the medieval one, on a slope beneath the castle, and the Georgian one, of straight streets. Capital of Scotland, with about 530,000 residents, it was raised over an extinct volcano and hosts 3,000 shows every August.
