# Stockholm: map, what to do and when to go

Stockholm spans 14 islands between Lake Mälaren and the Baltic, with a medieval old town, the Vasa ship and an archipelago on its doorstep. Sweden's capital is where the Nobel Prizes are awarded, line numbers come from a machine and almost nobody pays cash.

About 98% of the timber is original. Opened in 1990, it's the most visited museum in Scandinavia, with more than 1 million visitors a year.
