## Direct answer
- **Malta: how many days and which base should I choose?** I would set aside five full days for a first Malta visit, based in Valletta or Floriana: Valletta, Birgu and a southern site, Mdina with Rabat, southwest coast temples and a day in Gozo.
- **Malta: how do I arrive from the airport and choose a bus card?** The international airport uses code MLA.
- **Malta: what conditions apply to visiting the Hypogeum?** The prehistoric underground funerary complex in Paola has controlled visits and timed admission.

## Valletta, co-cathedral and Grand Harbour
Begin the first full day from accommodation in Valletta or Floriana. Adjust the day order so St John's does not fall on a Sunday or public holiday. If arriving through the land terminal, observe Tritons’ Fountain and enter through City Gate, respecting circulation in the square.
- St John’s Co-Cathedral
- Upper Barrakka Gardens
- Grand Master’s Palace
- Fort St Elmo and the National War Museum
- National Museum of Archaeology
- Tritons’ Fountain

## Birgu and one prehistoric choice in the south
Cross the Grand Harbour on the appropriate urban service if operating, or use a bus to Birgu. Walk its streets and waterfront without trying to complete all the Three Cities.
- Birgu (Vittoriosa)
- Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum
- Ħal Tarxien Prehistoric Complex
- Fort St Angelo

## Mdina and Rabat
Leave Valletta C2 for Mdina on Malta Public Transport route 51, checking the timetable and Mdina stop, or use arranged transport. The timetable reference is around half an hour in the vehicle on some departures; add waiting and traffic. Explore the walled core in the morning, respecting residential doors and streets.
- Mdina
- St Paul’s Catacombs
- St Paul’s Cathedral in Mdina

## Ħaġar Qim, Mnajdra and an afternoon buffer
Leave your base for Ħaġar Qim/Mnajdra archaeological park. The bus reference is route 74 from Valletta A5 to Hagar in Qrendi; confirm the variant, visit time and return before leaving. Start at the interpretation centre and arrange the walk between temples according to opening, heat and mobility.
- Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra Archaeological Park
- Blue Grotto at Wied iż-Żurrieq

## Gozo, the citadel and Ġgantija
Leave your accommodation early for Valletta's Gozo Highspeed terminal, with ticket and return confirmed. The 45-minute reference covers only sailing to Mġarr.
- Cittadella
- Ġgantija Archaeological Park
- Dwejra and the Inland Sea
- Blue Hole at Dwejra
- Fungus Rock
- Dwejra Tower

## St John’s Co-Cathedral
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/malta/#g-lugar-st-john-s-co-cathedral
Valeta · Half a day or more
Valletta's co-cathedral brings together chapels of the Order of St John, a floor of tombstones and paintings, including works by Caravaggio. The interior deserves its own time beyond the facade. Tourist visits close on Sundays and public holidays; Mass does not mean the art route is open. When consulted on 16 October 2026, adult admission was €15 and the adjoining museum was closed for expansion and refurbishment. Confirm open areas and wear suitable clothing and permitted footwear; stilettos are not accepted.

## Upper Barrakka Gardens
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/malta/#g-lugar-upper-barrakka-gardens
Valeta · Up to half an hour
The viewpoint explains Valletta's position facing the Grand Harbour and Three Cities. It makes a good stop during a walk, exposed to sun and wind. The view does not automatically include visiting the lower battery or a boat crossing. To continue to the sea terminal, check access by lift or the downhill route, remembering that the city stands above the water.
Check access

## Grand Master’s Palace
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/malta/#g-lugar-grand-master-s-palace
Half a day or more
The palace helps explain the Order of St John and the building's later uses as a seat of power. The Armoury and State Rooms may have different access during state activities. When consulted in October 2026, the Throne Room remained closed until further notice, and some dates restricted access to other rooms. Check the day's notice before buying; a general description of the collections does not guarantee every room is open.
Check access

## Fort St Elmo and the National War Museum
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/malta/#g-lugar-fort-st-elmo
Valeta · Half a day or more
The fortification and museum expand military history beyond the view of the walls. Choose this visit to understand the Great Siege and Second World War, reserving a substantial part of the day. It is not a quick room to add after every Valletta interior. Check operation, exhibitions and admission with Heritage Malta.
Check access

## Birgu (Vittoriosa)
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/malta/#g-lugar-birgu
Port Region · Half a day or more
One of the Three Cities across the Grand Harbour, it combines historic streets, the waterfront and the approach to Fort St Angelo. Walking through Birgu has its own identity and does not oblige you to visit Isla and Bormla as three museums in sequence. The crossing depends on the chosen port and operator; boats for Gozo and urban ferries have different destinations.
Check access

## Mdina
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/malta/#g-lugar-mdina
Western Region · Half a day or more
The inland walled town reveals streets, palaces and the contrast between the fortified core and Rabat just outside. It suits walking while respecting residential areas. Check return transport for the end of the day; sleeping here is a separate logistical choice rather than an extension of Valletta's harbour base. Entry to the urban core does not include every museum and church.
Check access

## St Paul’s Catacombs
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/malta/#g-lugar-st-paul-s-catacombs
One to two hours
In Rabat, the catacombs present a Late Antique funerary context, different from the prehistoric temples and Hypogeum. They suit visitors wanting an underground route; assess steps, narrow spaces and access for reduced mobility. The name associated with St Paul should not be used to claim the apostle occupied all these spaces.
Check access

## Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/malta/#g-lugar-al-saflieni-hypogeum
Paola · One to two hours
The prehistoric underground funerary complex in Paola has controlled visits and timed admission. Book early with Heritage Malta: an audiovisual exhibition ticket is not a visit through the site. When consulted in October 2026, the regular rate for adults aged 18 to 59 was €35. Children under six cannot enter; the archaeological site is not wheelchair accessible. The operator requires comfortable closed shoes, prohibits photography and requests arrival 15 minutes early.

## Ħal Tarxien Prehistoric Complex
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/malta/#g-lugar-al-tarxien-prehistoric-complex
One to two hours
The complex reveals the organisation and decoration of prehistoric temples in a context different from the Hypogeum. It is an alternative in the Paola and Tarxien sector if no underground reservation is available, but the two visits are not equivalent. Check access and opening with Heritage Malta; original pieces and elements protected in museums should be distinguished from what is displayed at the site.
Check access

## Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra Archaeological Park
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/malta/#g-lugar-agar-qim
Qrendi · Half a day or more
The park brings together two temple complexes on the southwest coast, with an interpretation centre and a walk between them. The visit reveals prehistoric architecture beside the seascape, on stretches still exposed to wind and heat despite protective shelters. Choose suitable footwear and confirm the accessible route if mobility is restricted. Do not treat the second temple as a room beside the first ticket office.
Check access

## Cittadella
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/malta/#g-lugar-cittadella
Victoria · Half a day or more
The citadel above Victoria in Gozo offers streets, walls and institutions with their own tickets. The view from above locates the island landscape and combines well with lunch in Victoria. The outdoor route does not automatically include the cathedral, museums and visitor centre. Choose interiors according to interest and time available before the return boat.
Check access

## Ġgantija Archaeological Park
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/malta/#g-lugar-ggantija-archaeological-park
Half a day or more
The temples in Xagħra, Gozo, form part of the megalithic temples property recognised by UNESCO. The interpretation centre and remains help explain prehistoric building techniques; it is unnecessary to repeat every Maltese complex to recognise differences. The visit requires travel within Gozo, separate from the sea crossing to Mġarr.
Check access

## Blue Lagoon
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/malta/#g-lugar-blue-lagoon
Half a day or more
Comino's inlet calls for its own day, with sea transport and swimming conditions checked. To land in the regulated area, the free access reservation is separate from buying the boat ticket and must match the time actually available. The system generates a QR code and rules on staying; check the current portal rather than copying old time slots. The clear-water landscape can be crowded and has little natural shelter: bring water and sun protection and do not expect a long sandy beach.

## Fort St Angelo
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/malta/#g-lugar-fort-st-angelo
Birgu · Half a day or more
At the tip of Birgu's peninsula, the fort dominates the Grand Harbour and presents the harbour's military importance, including the Order of St John's role in the siege of 1565. It is a separate visit, with interpretation spaces and views, different from simply walking through Birgu. Heritage Malta recommends around two hours and listed admission at €10 per adult (18+) when consulted on 16 October 2026. The upper section involves stairs; confirm mobility and opening conditions with the operator. If choosing it, replace the day's other long visit rather than automatically adding it to the Hypogeum.

## Dwejra and the Inland Sea
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/malta/#g-lugar-dwejra
One to two hours
On Gozo's west coast, Dwejra brings together cliffs, geological depressions and the Inland Sea, connected to the sea by a natural tunnel. Observe the landscape from permitted routes; the tower and Fungus Rock islet are distinct landmarks within it. The Azure Window collapsed in 2017 and is not an arch still standing. Boat trips through the tunnel depend on the sea and are booked separately; the landscape can be visited without sailing or entering the water. For the Gozo day, choose Dwejra instead of Ġgantija with transport and return to the port confirmed, or add an overnight stay to explore the island with more time.

## National Museum of Archaeology
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/malta/#g-lugar-national-museum-of-archaeology
Valeta · One to two hours
At the Auberge de Provence on Republic Street, Valletta, original objects help explain the temples and Hypogeum beyond the structures visited on site. The Sleeping Lady, Venus of Malta and Tarxien sculptures form part of this reading of prehistory. Do not confuse this museum with St John's Co-Cathedral museum or Gozo's archaeological museum. Check open galleries and Heritage Malta's calendar; the adult 18+ ticket published on 16 October 2026 is €5, with separate categories. It is an alternative to the palace or military-history afternoon in Valletta, preserving time to explore the collections.
Check access

## Blue Hole at Dwejra
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/malta/#g-lugar-blue-hole-de-dwejra
Up to half an hour
The vertical formation in the rock beside the sea is a Gozo dive site, distinct from the Inland Sea and Comino's Blue Lagoon. On the land visit to Dwejra, observe only from permitted approaches, respecting uneven ground, edges and waves. Water seen from above does not make it a simple swimming pool. Those planning to dive must arrange the activity, required experience, equipment and assessment of conditions with a qualified operator; it occupies its own period. It is not automatically part of the Gozo afternoon walk or a boat ticket through the Inland Sea tunnel.

## Fungus Rock
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/malta/#g-lugar-fungus-rock
Saint Lawrence · Up to half an hour
The high-sided islet off Dwejra Bay is observed from the coast, in a different position from the Blue Hole and the former Azure Window site. Its history relates to the plant once collected and protected in the knights' time; its name should not be taken as botanical identification of a mushroom. Choose a permitted land viewpoint and keep away from edges in wind or rough seas. Observe the islet from the coast, without landing on it or climbing it. It fits the landscape time at Dwejra without requiring a boat trip or swim.
Check access

## Dwejra Tower
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/malta/#g-lugar-dwejra-tower
Saint Lawrence · Up to half an hour
The watchtower connects Dwejra's landscape with coastal defence and the historic protection of Fungus Rock. Its exterior can be observed on the walk; entry depends on opening by Din l-Art Ħelwa volunteers, and the terrace requires the corresponding access. Confirm the session with the institution before scheduling the interior, without assuming it is open because it belongs to the same area as the Inland Sea. If choosing the visit, shorten another coastal stretch and preserve your return bus or taxi. A tower exhibition does not include a boat, diving or islet access.

## Blue Grotto at Wied iż-Żurrieq
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/malta/#g-lugar-blue-grotto-de-wied-iz-zurrieq
One to two hours
On the coast of the island of Malta, the arch and sea caves offer scenery distinct from Comino's Blue Lagoon and Gozo's Blue Hole. Land views and navigation are separate programmes: for the boat, descend to the operating point in Wied iż-Żurrieq and confirm departure with Blue Grotto Boat Service, subject to sea and wind. Routes 74 and 201 have a reference at Grotto stop, but access to boarding and the return must be planned separately. I would replace the free afternoon after the temples with this choice only with viable transport and operation, without adding another coastal circuit.

## Marsaxlokk harbour
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/malta/#g-lugar-porto-de-marsaxlokk
One to two hours
The harbour in southeastern Malta offers views of colourful luzzu and waterfront activity, a different visit from Birgu's fortifications. Respect boats, nets and working areas; a photograph of a boat does not mean an outing is included. For a fish lunch, check species, price and charging unit before ordering. The market has its own offerings and calendar, without every stall guaranteed on any morning. From your base, check routes 81/85 and the return, or arrange a taxi. It fits as a half-day alternative to the southern interior choice, without squeezing a Hypogeum reservation.
Check access

## Dingli Cliffs
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/malta/#g-lugar-dingli-cliffs
One to two hours
The cliffs in western Malta reveal the drop between plateau and Mediterranean in a rural setting distinct from Valletta and the temples. Choose an authorised access and keep away from edges; heat, wind and uneven ground can make a long walk unsuitable. Routes 52/56 serve Dingli, but reaching the village is not equivalent to being at any panoramic point: confirm the final stretch and return, or arrange transport to the address. I would replace part of the Mdina/Rabat afternoon with coastal viewing, reducing the additional interior. I would not combine it with the Blue Grotto in the same afternoon out of obligation.

## Tritons’ Fountain
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/malta/#g-lugar-tritons-fountain
Valeta · Up to half an hour
On the land approach between Floriana and Valletta's entrance, the three tritons and fountain basin provide a landmark for the walk. The monument is a stop in the square's public space, distinct from a viewpoint over the Grand Harbour. Observe the sculptural composition and continue to City Gate without blocking flows between terminals and town. The fountain may be off for maintenance, and events may alter circulation; water or lighting is not required to recognise the work. It fits the start of the Valletta day without a separate sightseeing journey.

## St Paul’s Cathedral in Mdina
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/malta/#g-lugar-st-paul-s-cathedral-de-mdina
Mdina · One to two hours
The Baroque cathedral is a distinct interior within the walled town; it is neither St John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta nor St Paul's Catacombs in Rabat. The combined tourist ticket with the museum is bought at the nearby museum, with its own categories and validity. The operator's October 2026 notice indicates regular visits Monday to Saturday and tourist closure on Sundays and public holidays, alongside restrictions for services; also check weddings causing early closure. On the Mdina/Rabat day, choose this ensemble instead of another lengthy indoor visit, preserving lunch, walking and the return to base.

## Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/malta/#g-lugar-ta-pinu-sanctuary
Għarb · One to two hours
In the Għarb sector of Gozo, the Marian sanctuary connects pale-stone architecture with devotion, mosaics and pilgrims' ex-votos. Respect worship and check which areas are open; basilica, museums and the Stations of the Cross walk on the hill have different functions and requirements. Route 308 leaves Victoria Bay 3 and calls at Pinu stop; check the return circuit or arrange a taxi to preserve the port connection. I would choose it as a religious alternative to Ġgantija or the Dwejra afternoon, without putting all three outings into the same ferry day.

**Malta: how many days and which base should I choose?**
I would set aside five full days for a first Malta visit, based in Valletta or Floriana: Valletta, Birgu and a southern site, Mdina with Rabat, southwest coast temples and a day in Gozo. This allows visiting interiors without turning every meal into a rushed interval between buses. Comino can add a sixth day, with reservation and sea conditions confirmed. For beaches and rest in Gozo, I would add overnight stays there; I would not try to combine all Gozo and the Blue Lagoon in one outing.

**Malta: how do I arrive from the airport and choose a bus card?**
The international airport uses code MLA. For a base in Valletta or Floriana, the reference is Airport Direct 4, identified as TD4, towards Valletta/Gozo Fast Ferry. Board at the signposted bus terminal after arrivals and choose the stop serving your accommodation; do not confuse the capital above the harbour with the sea terminal. Consult Malta Public Transport's timetable and notices for the day, especially for the return flight.

Malta Public Transport buses serve Malta and Gozo. On 16 October 2026, Explore Adult 7 Day cost €25, was personal and covered daytime and night routes, excluding tallinja Direct. Airport Direct is a different category: the operator includes it in unlimited-travel cards, including its seven-day guidance; the TD4 abbreviation alone does not mean this airport bus is excluded. Explore Flex and its offers have their own inclusions and prices. Compare the full product and validate the travel card on every boarding.

**Malta: what conditions apply to visiting the Hypogeum?**

**Malta: how should I organise a day in Gozo?**
Allow a full day from Valletta or Floriana. Confirm outward and return Gozo Highspeed journeys; the published 45 minutes cover only navigation to Mġarr. Add terminal access, boarding, waiting and land transport. From Vapur beside the terminal, route 301 runs to Victoria, where you can visit the Cittadella and have lunch.

Choose one outing after Victoria: Ġgantija on circular route 307 from Victoria Bay 3 to Ggantija; Dwejra on the 311 from Victoria Bay 1; or Ta’ Pinu on the 308 from Victoria Bay 3 to Pinu. Dwejra and Ta’ Pinu replace the temples, without adding all three areas in the afternoon. The roughly 17–18 minutes on some 311 services cover the vehicle only, plus waiting and walking. At Dwejra, use permitted approaches; an Inland Sea boat is optional and subject to sea conditions, and diving is not included in the walk.

Confirm opening, route and return for each choice and the 301 connection to Mġarr, preserving a boarding buffer; without a useful combination, book a taxi or stay in Victoria alone. Return to the same Malta accommodation. If sea services are cancelled, use an urban programme and rearrange Gozo only for another safe date; do not risk your departure flight.

**Malta: does the boat guarantee access to the Blue Lagoon?**
As a departure reference for Comino, reach Ċirkewwa in northern Malta by Malta Public Transport checked for your date or an arranged taxi. This land access from Valletta is separate from the sailing. Ebsons Comino Ferries from Ċirkewwa advertises around 20 minutes each way to the Blue Lagoon; that is the duration of this service, rather than every outing from Sliema or Gozo. Confirm the exact boarding point, day's operation and return, without treating a published departure as guaranteed space. Before buying, match the boat with the free access reservation on the Blue Lagoon portal: the QR code is separate from the ticket. It is an optional sixth day, subject to the sea, rather than an addition to the Gozo day.

**Malta: can I visit St John’s on Sunday?**
