**Medellín: Where's the airport, and how do you get downtown?**
José María Córdova Airport (MDE) is in Rionegro, about 35 km away and at 2,140 m altitude, 45 to 70 minutes over a mountain road. Your options are the official taxi (COP 90,000 to 120,000), shared vans that leave once full (COP 25,000 to 35,000) and the bus to San Diego (COP 15,000 to 20,000).

**Medellín: How do you get to Guatapé and El Peñón?**
By bus: Guatapé is 80 km east, about 2 hours from Terminal del Norte, for COP 20,000 to 28,000. Go early, because the buses back fill up after 4pm.

**Medellín: What's the currency, and what's the exchange rate for the Brazilian real?**
The currency is the Colombian peso (COP). In 2026 the Brazilian real fluctuated in the COP 730 to 800 range, and the dollar in the COP 3,900 to 4,200 range.

**Medellín: How do you order something at a counter or restaurant?**
“¿Me regala un tinto?” or “regáleme la cuenta” is the normal, polite way to ask for something you're going to pay for.

**Medellín: What's the real risk for visitors?**
The practical risk is property crime: phone and backpack theft on busy streets, buses and terminals. Violence has dropped from about 380 homicides per 100,000 residents in 1991 to 14 to 16 in recent years, in local disputes that don't involve visitors.
