# Melbourne: map, what to do and when to go

The best of Melbourne is in the laneways, basements and unmarked second floors: cafes, bars and live music. Capital of Victoria, with 5.3 million people, it has a grid downtown and trams in the street, grew with the 1851 gold rush and changed with every wave of immigration since 1945.

**Melbourne: Is the city safe?**
Yes, by world standards: the biggest risk is opportunistic theft, like a phone left on the café table or a bag on the bar floor. After midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, it's worth avoiding the stretch of King Street downtown, where the chaos of clubs letting out concentrates.

**Melbourne: What's the difference between a flat white and a long black?**
The flat white is espresso with steamed milk with fine, smooth foam; the long black is two shots of espresso served over hot water.
