## Historic City of Porto Seguro
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/porto-seguro/#g-lugar-cidade-historica-de-porto-seguro
One to two hours
The oldest core of the main town occupies the heights above the river and the sea, on a lawn with low, colorful houses. The visit begins at the Marco do Descobrimento, a stone column with the Portuguese coat of arms whose origin is debated, and continues to the Church of Nossa Senhora da Pena, which stands on the site of the 1535 mother church; the present building dates from the 18th century and holds old sacred images. Alongside, the former Casa de Câmara e Cadeia houses the museum, with pieces of Indigenous culture and navigation instruments. The Church of the Misericórdia usually opens only on special dates, and farther on are the lighthouse, with a view of the lower town, and the Church of São Benedito, next to Jesuit ruins. The complex has been a National Monument since 1973. There is parking at the top, with no stairs, but the dirt and grass ground makes wheelchairs difficult. Confirm the museum's and churches' hours with the Tourism Office, since they are not published in a current source.

One to two hours
Known as Passarela do Álcool, it is the pedestrian street of the center, near the pier, which at night works as an open-air market: bars, restaurants, drink stands and craft shops. It is the classic night out for those who sleep in the main town, and pairs well with the ferry back to Arraial, which runs all night.

## Taperapuã Beach
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/porto-seguro/#g-lugar-praia-de-taperapua
Half a day or more
The best-known beach on the Orla Norte, 7 km from the center, with big beach huts, axé music, capoeira circles by the water and a menu of shared platters. It is the choice for those who want a daytime party and facilities; those looking for calm water and less noise will find it on the beaches of Arraial and Trancoso.

## Recife de Fora Municipal Marine Park
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/porto-seguro/#g-lugar-parque-municipal-marinho-do
Half a day or more
A protected coral reef bank of about 17.5 km², some five nautical miles from the coast, or about an hour by boat from the center. At low tide, part of the reef is exposed and forms natural pools for snorkeling. The visit depends on the tide and can only be made on an authorized tour, stepping only on the marked area; boats leave the center at the time the day's tide allows. There is a municipal visitation fee in addition to the tour: check the amount, date and what is included with the agency when booking.

## Jaqueira Pataxó Reserve
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/porto-seguro/#g-lugar-reserva-pataxo-da-jaqueira
One to two hours
A forest area kept by the Pataxó within the Coroa Vermelha Indigenous Land, north of the center. The visit is guided by the community: a talk about the people's history, a dance performance, a guided tour of the village and, on many tours, fish roasted in patioba leaf. The last kilometers are dirt road. Opening days, hours and price change; arrange with the reserve or a local agency before going.

## Coroa Vermelha
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/porto-seguro/#g-lugar-coroa-vermelha
Up to half an hour
Facing the islet of Coroa Vermelha, where Friar Henrique de Coimbra celebrated the first Mass on April 26, 1500, the beach and the village now lie within the Pataxó Coroa Vermelha Indigenous Land, demarcated in 1996, on the border with Santa Cruz Cabrália, about 17 km from the center of Porto Seguro by road. The draw is the history of the place and the Pataxó crafts sold there, such as seed necklaces and kitchen utensils; it combines with the Jaqueira Reserve on the same outing.

## Church of Nossa Senhora d'Ajuda
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/porto-seguro/#g-lugar-igreja-de-nossa-senhora-d-ajuda
Up to half an hour
The church of Arraial d'Ajuda was begun by the Jesuits in 1550, and the present building dates from 1772. It stands on top of the plateau, in the square where the vans from the ferry end their route, and is the center of the pilgrimage of August 6 to 15. A natural starting point for heading down to the beaches or into Rua do Mucugê.

Porto Seguro · Half a day or more
South of the center of Arraial, Pitinga has colorful cliffs, rock formations and natural pools at low tide. Vans run from the center. For those who want to walk farther, Lagoa Azul is about 25 minutes on foot from Pitinga, and Taípe Beach, with cliffs up to 20 m, a little beyond. Closer to the center, Parracho, ten minutes on foot from Mucugê, forms a pool at the water's edge when the tide goes out.

Half a day or more
A water park on Mucugê Beach, in Arraial d'Ajuda. It appeals mainly to families with children; for others, a day there takes time from the region's beaches. Outside the high season it does not open every day: check the calendar and prices on the park's website before going.

## Quadrado of Trancoso
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/porto-seguro/#g-lugar-quadrado-de-trancoso
One to two hours
The square that gave rise to Trancoso is a rectangular lawn, despite the name, with colorful houses on both sides and the small colonial-era Church of São João Batista at the far end, on the bluff, facing the sea. The Jesuit village of 1586 grew around it. The Quadrado lies within the area protected by Iphan, and changes to facades, roofs or the lawn require the agency's approval. The houses have become restaurants, shops and inns, and at night the square is the center of the village. Behind the church, the view takes in the beaches and the Trancoso River below.

## Praia dos Coqueiros
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/porto-seguro/#g-lugar-praia-dos-coqueiros
Half a day or more
The most central beach in Trancoso, about 1 km from the Quadrado along a dirt path that descends beside the church. Reefs usually shelter the water, and the strip of coconut palms gives the beach its name and its shade. Next to it, Praia dos Nativos has more beach huts and beach clubs; the Trancoso River, which empties there, can be crossed on foot at low tide, and at high tide you have to go around by road.

## Praia do Espelho
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/porto-seguro/#g-lugar-praia-do-espelho
Porto Seguro · Half a day or more
About 24 km south of the Quadrado, at the end of a stretch of dirt road, the pale-sand beach under cliffs forms warm pools among the reefs at low tide. The parking lots are on top of the cliff and are paid. Plan by the tide table: at high tide, the pools disappear. After heavy rain, the road calls for a high-clearance car or a 4x4. It can also be reached from Caraíva, along the sand, by boat or by car.

## Caraíva
https://nilopelomundo.com/en/place/porto-seguro/#g-lugar-caraiva
Porto Seguro · Half a day or more
The village sits on a spit of sand between the Caraíva River and the sea, and has no cars: vehicles stay in the parking lot on the other side of the river, and the boat crossing is under 200 meters. The streets are sand, the inns are generally simple, and at night forró pé de serra fills the dance halls. Electricity arrived relatively recently and still fails at summer peaks, and there is no bank or ATM. By day, you float down the river, go to the Pataxó village of Barra Velha, or to Ponta do Corumbau. Avoid arriving at night.

**Porto Seguro: how do I get from the airport to Arraial d'Ajuda?**
A direct taxi or ride-hailing car usually goes by road, more than 50 km longer and more expensive. It costs less to drive to the ferry, in the center, cross on foot and take a van, bus or taxi on the Arraial side.

**Porto Seguro: how does the ferry to Arraial d'Ajuda work?**
It runs 24 hours a day, every half hour during the day and every hour overnight, with a crossing of about ten minutes. In November 2024 pedestrians paid R$ 5.40, only on the way to Arraial, and not all companies accept cards.

**Porto Seguro: how many days should I stay?**
Three days, based in Arraial d'Ajuda, and four if possible: the main town, Arraial, Trancoso with Praia do Espelho and, on the fourth, Recife de Fora and the Jaqueira Reserve. Caraíva stays outside this count and calls for at least one night in the village.

**Porto Seguro: where should I stay?**
Arraial d'Ajuda is the most balanced base, ten minutes by ferry from the main town and on the road to Trancoso, but it depends on the ferry line in summer. The center suits those arriving late or going out at night, and those who only want a beach party can stay in the main town; Trancoso is the priciest and quietest area.

**Porto Seguro: how do I visit Trancoso and Praia do Espelho?**
Go by rental car, taxi or transfer: Espelho is about 24 km beyond the Quadrado, with a final dirt stretch. If low tide falls in the morning, start at Espelho and finish at the Quadrado; if it falls in the afternoon, do the Quadrado and Praia dos Coqueiros first.

**Porto Seguro: can I visit Caraíva and return the same day?**
It does not work: the village is about 60 km south of Trancoso, much of it on dirt road, close to two hours by car in dry weather, and the last stretch is a boat across the river from Nova Caraíva. It is an extension of at least one night; arrive by day and bring cash.

**Porto Seguro: how do I visit Recife de Fora?**
Only on an authorized tour, which leaves the center at the time the day's low tide allows, about an hour by boat. There is a municipal visitation fee in addition to the tour: check the amount, date and what is included with the agency when booking.

**Porto Seguro: when is the best time to go?**
August and September, the driest months on average and the safest for the dirt roads. December to February is summer, hotter, more crowded and more expensive, and March, April, November and December have the most rain.

**Porto Seguro: do I need cash?**
In Porto Seguro, Arraial and Trancoso, cards are accepted at most places and Pix is common, but carry cash for the ferry, whose companies do not always accept cards, for beach vendors and for vans. In Caraíva there is no bank or ATM.
