# Sahara: map, what to do and when to go

In Morocco's Sahara, the world's largest hot desert, the trip runs through oases, rammed-earth villages and the dunes of Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga. It lies south of the Atlas, near the border with Algeria, and less than a fifth of the Sahara is dune: the rest is rock and gravel.

Morocco's tallest and most accessible dune field: about 28 km long by 5–7 km wide, with crests rising some 150 m above the plain. The dunes sit on ancient river sediment, not on endless sand: 3 km from the western edge you're already walking on stone.

## Erg Chigaga

A few families still live inside; upkeep depends on mud-and-straw plaster redone after every heavy rain, which makes the place a hands-on lesson in earth building.
