# Varanasi: map, what to do and when to go

In Varanasi, prayer, commerce, and cremation happen side by side, on the same steps along the Ganges. A sacred Hindu city on the river's northern bend, it has been continuously inhabited for about 3,000 years, and its 84 stairways were nearly all built between 1730 and 1830.
