Who it is for

For lovers of ancient history who want to see both sides of the Punic Wars, with a short flight between them.

Not for anyone who wants beaches, since in Tunis the trip is about the medina and the archaeological site.

The strategy

Tunis and Carthage come first, and Rome comes next, a little over an hour away by flight. The order follows history: first the defeated city, then the one that won.

What you will see

  • Carthage archaeological site, Tunis. The archaeological site of Carthage brings together nine areas spread over about 5 km, on UNESCO's list since 1979: the Baths of Antoninus, from 145–162, by the sea; the Punic ports, one circular and one rectangular; the Salammbô tophet, with its votive stelae; the Punic quarter of Byrsa; the Roman theater used for the Carthage Festival; and the La Malga cisterns, fed by a 132-km aqueduct from Zaghouan.
  • Colosseum, Rome. Opened in AD 80 under Titus: an ellipse 188 by 156 m, 48 m tall, with an estimated capacity of 50,000 spectators.
