Who it is for
For a first trip to Florida that splits the days between Orlando’s theme parks and Miami’s beach and neighbourhoods.
Not for anyone who wants to travel without planning or a car: the parks need date-specific tickets and paid queue passes decided in advance, and in Orlando almost every journey is by car or ride-hailing app.
The strategy
Orlando comes first, while there is energy for the parks: alternate Disney, Universal and a park-free day in Winter Park, Lake Eola and Mills 50 instead of doing four parks in a row. Buy dated tickets ahead and settle the car question, because Disney, Universal, International Drive and the airport lie in different directions; in 2026 Disney and Universal charge US$35 a day for parking. To head down to Miami, the Brightline train leaves from the intermodal terminal at Orlando airport (MCO) and reaches MiamiCentral station in about 3h30; check the timetable for your date. In Miami, choose the hotel by the neighbourhood you want to see and keep a rental car just for the Everglades day. Fly home from Miami (MIA) or from Fort Lauderdale (FLL), 45 km away, which often has cheaper fares. November to April is the dry season in both cities.
What you will see
- Magic Kingdom, Orlando. Opened on October 1, 1971, it is the most visited theme park in the world, with about 17.83 million visitors in 2024.
- Art Deco Historic District, Miami. About 800 buildings from 1930–1942 between 5th and 23rd streets in Miami Beach, with symmetrical facades, concrete “eyebrows” over the windows, and restored neon.
