Two at Disney, one at the Magic Kingdom and another at EPCOT or Animal Kingdom; two at Universal, one at Epic Universe and another at Islands of Adventure with Diagon Alley, using the park-to-park ticket; and a no-park day in the middle, in Winter Park, at Lake Eola, and in Mills 50. Alternating Disney, Universal, and the city day is less tiring than doing four parks in a row. With six days, I'd go to the Kennedy Space Center, an hour by car; with seven, between November and March, to Blue Spring to see the manatees, and the rest of the year to Wekiwa to swim. Hollywood Studios is worth it for people who like Star Wars or Toy Story, and SeaWorld for people who go for the roller coasters; on a short trip, those two are the first to go. With just one day, I'd pick the Magic Kingdom, buy the Lightning Lane Multi Pass, and arrive an hour before opening. Orlando does not suit anyone who wants a trip without a car, without planning, or cheap: the distances between parks, hotel, and airport call for a car or rideshare, and the paid lines, the tickets by date, and the parking call for math done beforehand.

When November to April, the dry and cooler season; February to April have the highest hotel rates, and the busiest holidays, such as New Year's, have the most expensive one-day tickets
How the guide reaches this number
Orlando has two seasons, separated by rain more than by cold. The dry season runs from November to April: in January, the average high is 22 °C and the low 10 °C, and November is the month with the least rain of the year, 45 mm. It is the best time to spend the whole day outdoors, but not the cheapest: in 2026, the county's average hotel rate passed US$250 in February and in April, and the one-day Magic Kingdom ticket reaches US$209 on the highest-demand holidays, such as New Year's. The rainy season runs from May to October, with highs of 33 °C in July, high humidity, and strong, short storms almost every late afternoon, especially from June to September. The hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30: the storm reaches the interior weaker than on the coast, but it can close parks and the airport, as Milton did in October 2024. At the springs, the water stays between 22 °C and 23 °C all year, and at Blue Spring swimming is prohibited from mid-November to March, when the manatees arrive. EPCOT holds its food and wine festival from August 27 to November 21, 2026, and Universal's Volcano Bay water park closes from October 26, 2026 until spring 2027.
Per person/day Budget about 135 USD; mid-range about 368 USD; comfortable about 1,080 USD per person, based on what travelers report spending on Budget Your Trip (checked October 2026).

What Nilo thinksI'd stay five days. Orlando does not suit anyone who wants a trip without a car, without planning, or cheap: the distances between parks, hotel, and airport call for a car or rideshare, and the paid lines, the tickets by date, and the parking call for math done beforehand.Orlando has eight major theme parks within a short distance of one another: four from Disney, three from Universal, counting Epic Universe, opened in 2025, and SeaWorld. They are what brought 76.7 million visitors in 2025, and it is natural for the trip to revolve around the choice among the Magic Kingdom castle, Diagon Alley, and Super Nintendo World. But the Orlando outside the parks lies to the north. Winter Park has lakes joined by canals and the chapel Tiffany built for the 1893 Chicago exposition. Downtown centers on Lake Eola, and just above it is Mills 50, the neighborhood formed by Vietnamese refugees from the 1970s on, with phở and bánh mì restaurants. North of the city, aquifer water comes out of the limestone at 22 °C or 23 °C in springs where you swim in summer and, in winter, see hundreds of manatees.

Nilo's tips
Pick the park date before the hotel
At Disney and Universal, the one-day ticket is priced by date. In 2026, the Magic Kingdom runs from US$139 to US$209, and Epic Universe from US$139 to US$199, before the 6.5% tax. Build the trip from the price calendar: swapping the day of each park within the same week can save the cost of one paid line per person.
Pay for the line only where it pays off
Lightning Lane Multi Pass costs up to US$45 per person per day at the Magic Kingdom and less at the other Disney parks, and Universal's Express starts at US$109.99. I'd pay at the busiest park of the trip, the Magic Kingdom or Epic Universe, and do the others in the regular line, arriving before opening. Single Pass is sold per ride, only for specific attractions that are not included in Multi Pass; check which product covers your chosen ride and the price for your date.
Sleep at the hotel of the park that matters most
Guests at Disney hotels park free at the parks. Guests of Disney hotels and selected partner hotels can buy Lightning Lane passes starting seven days before check-in, for up to 14 days of their stay. For others, the window is three days: before the start date of a date-based ticket, for its valid admission days; with other tickets or an annual pass, before the park visit. Check eligibility in My Disney Experience; availability is limited. At Universal's three Premier hotels, unlimited Express for Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure is already included, which changes the math on the US$360 to 800 rate.
Put a no-park day in the middle
After two park days in a row, a day in Winter Park, at Lake Eola and in Mills 50, or at a spring, gives you back your energy for the next parks. The Scenic Boat Tour leaves every hour, with no reservation, and the Morse Museum is a few blocks from it.
Use the afternoon rain to your advantage
From June to September, the storm usually falls in the late afternoon. I'd save the late lunch, the covered attractions, or a break at the hotel for that time, and go back to the park in the evening, with the castle lit up and less sun.
See the manatees between November and March
In winter, hundreds of manatees shelter in the 23 °C water of Blue Spring, north of Orlando. Reserve entry on the state parks website, up to 60 days ahead, and go in the morning.

Orlando: A plain of lakes on limestone
The same rock holds the aquifer that feeds the springs north of the city, such as Wekiwa, which releases about 159 million liters of water a day at 22 °C. It suits anyone who wants to see the city outside the parks and go out at night without a car.

Magic Kingdom
Opened on October 1, 1971, it is the most visited theme park in the world, with about 17.83 million visitors in 2024. It covers 43 hectares in six lands, from Main Street, U.S.A. to Tomorrowland, around Cinderella Castle. The most in-demand roller coasters are the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, from 2014, and the TRON Lightcycle Run. Those who arrive by car park more than 1.5 km away, take the tram to the transportation center, and cross the Seven Seas Lagoon by boat or monorail: allow for that time before opening. A one-day ticket costs from US$139 to US$209 in 2026, depending on the date, plus 6.5% tax.

Epic Universe
Universal's third theme park in Orlando, the fourth counting the Volcano Bay water park, opened on May 22, 2025, on a 45-hectare (111-acre) site south of the others. It has a hub, Celestial Park, with the Stardust Racers roller coaster, and four worlds: Universal's classic monsters, How to Train Your Dragon, Super Nintendo World, and Harry Potter's Ministry of Magic, with the Battle at the Ministry ride. Entry, lockers, and the express lines use facial recognition. A one-day ticket costs from US$139 to US$199, and parking is on its own lot, with the same payment for the day valid for the other Universal parks.
Opened on May 22, 2025, it is Orlando’s newest park, with five themed worlds, including Super Nintendo World and Harry Potter’s Ministry of Magic. It is the city’s biggest addition since Islands of Adventure opened in 1999.

EPCOT
Opened in 1982, it covers 123 hectares, more than twice the Magic Kingdom. At the front is Spaceship Earth, the 18-story geodesic sphere; behind it, the World Showcase, a 1.9 km loop around a lake with eleven country pavilions, from Canada to Mexico, each with restaurants and shops. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, from 2022, is the most in-demand roller coaster. The second entrance, the International Gateway, between France and the United Kingdom, receives the Skyliner gondola. A one-day ticket runs from US$129 to US$199 in 2026.
The 1.9 km World Showcase loop passes eleven country pavilions, and the park has Disney’s most varied food, especially during the food and wine festival, from August 27 to November 21, 2026.

Disney's Hollywood Studios
Disney's movie park, opened in 1989, covers 55 hectares and has two areas that draw the crowds: Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, from 2019, with Rise of the Resistance and Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, and Toy Story Land, from 2018, with Slinky Dog Dash. In 2026, the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster reopened with a Muppets theme and the former Animation Courtyard became The Walt Disney Studios Lot. A one-day ticket runs from US$139 to US$204.
Worth it for Star Wars or Toy Story fans: Galaxy’s Edge and Toy Story Land take up much of the park, and Rise of the Resistance has the most expensive individual Lightning Lane in 2026, up to US$25. If neither franchise interests you, swap this day for Animal Kingdom.

Disney's Animal Kingdom
Opened in 1998 on 230 hectares, it is a theme park and a zoo at once, with about 2,000 animals of 200 species. The Tree of Life, a 44 m artificial baobab, stands at the center; Kilimanjaro Safaris crosses a re-created African savanna in an open vehicle; and Pandora, from 2017, has Avatar Flight of Passage. The former DinoLand closed in 2026 to make way for a Latin American-themed area, planned for 2027. The one-day ticket is the cheapest at Disney, from US$119 to US$184.

Islands of Adventure
Universal's second park, opened in 1999, is divided into eight themed islands. Hogsmeade, the Harry Potter village, opened in 2010 and has the Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, from 2019; on the Jurassic Park island is the VelociCoaster, from 2021, Universal's fastest roller coaster. With a park-to-park ticket, the Hogwarts Express takes about 4 minutes to King's Cross, at Universal Studios Florida, where Diagon Alley is. A one-day ticket for one park starts at US$124.99.

Lake Eola Park
The 9-hectare lake in downtown Orlando is ringed by a 1.4 km path. The Linton E. Allen fountain, from 1957, was restored in 2011 after being struck by lightning and is lit at night. On the west side is the Walt Disney Amphitheater, and on Sundays, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Orlando Farmers Market is held. The land was donated to the city in 1883 on the condition that it become a park.

Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art
On Park Avenue in Winter Park, the museum, founded in 1942, has the most complete collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany, along with art pottery and American painting. The heart of the visit is the chapel Tiffany built for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, reassembled and opened to the public in 1999; another wing, from 2011, displays pieces from Laurelton Hall, his house on Long Island. Check admission and hours on the museum's website before you go.

Scenic Boat Tour
The Winter Park boat tour leaves from the end of Morse Boulevard, a few blocks from Park Avenue, and has run since 1938. It lasts an hour, with a guide, through the city's lakes and the narrow canals that join them, dug to control floods and carry logs to a sawmill. It departs every hour, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., every day except Christmas, on a first-come basis: it costs US$20 per adult and US$10 per child aged 2 to 11, tax included.
In one hour, the boat crosses Winter Park’s lakes and the narrow canals linking them, with old houses along the shore. Running since 1938, it departs hourly between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., without reservations, and costs US$20 per adult, tax included.

Day 6 · Kennedy Space Center
Day trip
The NASA visitor complex is in Merritt Island, 72 km east of Orlando, about 1 hour by car. A one-day ticket costs US$77 per adult and US$67 per child aged 3 to 11, and parking, charged separately, US$15 per car. Admission includes the space shuttle Atlantis with the launch simulator, the Rocket Garden, and the bus tour to the Apollo/Saturn V Center. It is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.: leave Orlando early to fit it all in.
Food
Phở and bánh mì in Mills 50
The Vietnamese soup of beef broth and rice noodles and the bánh mì, the Vietnamese baguette sandwich, are the neighborhood food of Mills 50, where the Vietnamese community settled in the 1970s. Bánh Mì Boy, downtown, is among the 2026 Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand picks, the good-value category.
Mofongo
Green plantain fried and mashed in a mortar with garlic, fat, and pork cracklings, served as a dome with fried meat or seafood. It is Puerto Rico's best-known dish, and Orlando has the largest Puerto Rican population in Florida.
Dole Whip
Creamy dairy-free pineapple soft serve, created by Dole in 1983 and sold at the Magic Kingdom since 1984. You eat it standing up, between one line and the next.
Butterbeer
The Butterbeer from the Harry Potter books, served cold or hot in Universal's Harry Potter areas, which also sell sweets with the same flavor. It tastes like butterscotch.
Dishes from the EPCOT Food & Wine Festival
During EPCOT's food and wine festival, from August 27 to November 21, 2026, kiosks around the World Showcase sell small portions of dishes from various countries, charged separately from the ticket. You can build lunch and dinner this way, instead of sitting down in a restaurant.
Key lime pie
Key lime pie, made with small Keys limes, condensed milk, and egg yolk on a cookie crust, has been Florida's official pie since 2006.

Blue Spring State Park
In Orange City, in Volusia County, north of Orlando, it is the largest spring on the St. Johns River and the main winter refuge for the region's manatees: from mid-November to March, hundreds of them gather in the 23 °C water, seen from the boardwalk, and swimming is prohibited. The rest of the year, the spring is for swimming and snorkeling. Since July 15, 2026, entry requires a reservation, made up to 60 days ahead on the Florida State Parks website, which already includes the per-car fee. The park is open from 8 a.m. to sunset.
Wekiwa Springs State Park
About 20 minutes by car north of Orlando, near Apopka, the spring releases about 159 million liters of water a day at 22 °C, in a natural pool up to 1.5 m deep. You can swim, rent a canoe or kayak, and paddle down the Wekiva River, and there are trails through the woods. The park uses entry reservations: make one ahead, especially for weekends and for summer.

Money

The currency is the US dollar, and the advertised price does not include tax: in Orange County, the sales tax is 6.5%, added at the register, including on theme park tickets. On lodging, the bill adds 12.5%, including the county's 6% tourist tax, and it is worth asking before you book whether the hotel charges any daily fee on top of the advertised room rate. In a restaurant with table service, the tip is 18% to 20%. The spending that weighs most is the parks. In 2026, a one-day ticket, before tax, costs US$139 to US$209 at the Magic Kingdom, US$129 to US$199 at EPCOT, US$139 to US$204 at Hollywood Studios, and US$119 to US$184 at Animal Kingdom; at Universal, from US$124.99 for one park and US$139 to US$199 at Epic Universe. A multi-day ticket lowers the price per day: a 4-day Disney ticket came to about US$140 per day in the August 2026 example, and Universal's 3-day park-to-park ticket, which includes Epic Universe, from US$431. The paid lines come on top. Disney's Lightning Lane Multi Pass costs up to US$45 per person per day at the Magic Kingdom, and the Single Pass, per ride, up to US$25 at Rise of the Resistance. Universal's Express starts at US$109.99 per person per day at one park, and at Epic Universe at US$139.99. Add parking too, at US$35 per day at Disney and Universal. In 2026, a counter-service meal in the parks runs between US$12 and 18 per person, and a table-service meal between US$25 and 75. The average hotel rate in Orange County was US$262 in February, US$254 in April, and US$222 in May 2026. Cards and contactless payment work almost everywhere, and some places, such as Leu Gardens, do not accept cash.
Getting there and around

From MCO airport, 9.7 km from downtown
Orlando International Airport (MCO) handled 57.7 million passengers in 2025 and is 9.7 km southeast of downtown. The simplest way out of it is a rental car or a rideshare, because Disney, Universal, and International Drive lie in different directions and there is no train to the parks. By bus, LYNX links Terminal A to downtown on route 11 and to International Drive on route 42, for US$2 a ride, with one free transfer within 90 minutes; you pay in cash, by tapping a card, or with the PawPass app. Disney's free transportation between the airport and its hotels ended in January 2022. Brightline trains leave the intermodal terminal for Miami, in about 3.5 hours. The restructuring announced in September 2026 concerns entities within the Brightline Florida group; the operator, Brightline Trains Florida LLC, did not file for Chapter 11 protection, according to the September 25 statement. Check the timetable for your travel date.
Car, parking, and the parks' transportation
Orlando was built for the car, and that is how most visitors get around between hotel, parks, and supermarket. Count parking in the budget: in 2026, Disney charges US$35 a day at the parks, and guests at Disney hotels park free; Universal charges US$35, tax included; prepaying online appears at about US$33 plus tax, a small saving, and the payment is good for all parks on the same day, including Epic Universe. Inside Walt Disney World, the buses, boats, monorail, and Skyliner gondola are free and link hotels and parks; Disney Springs has free parking. LYNX also reaches Disney and Universal, with routes such as the 38, from downtown to Universal and International Drive, and the 56 and 300, to Disney.
SunRail, LYMMO, and the city on foot
The SunRail train runs from DeLand to Poinciana, with stations in Winter Park and at Church Street, downtown, but it runs on weekdays, from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., with no regular weekend service, and it does not reach the airport or the parks. The fare is US$2 within one county, plus US$1 for each county crossed, paid with a SunCard or a value ticket, validated on entry and exit. Downtown, the LYMMO buses are free and pass by Lake Eola and the Kia Center. Downtown and Winter Park can be covered on foot; International Drive and US-192 are wide, multi-lane avenues built for cars, which you cross only at traffic lights.
Safety
Orlando's parks and tourist areas have their own security and surveillance, and the biggest risks for visitors are the weather and traffic. The humid summer heat, with highs of 33 °C, dehydrates people who spend the day in line: drink water all day and look for shade and air conditioning in the early afternoon. The storms from June to September bring lightning: when the sky closes in, take shelter in a covered, enclosed place. The hurricane season runs from June to November: if there is an alert, follow the guidance of the National Hurricane Center and the county, and check the hotel and ticket cancellation policies before traveling at that time. International Drive and US-192 are wide, fast avenues, dangerous for people on foot: cross only at traffic lights and take extra care at night. Florida's lakes and canals can have alligators; swim only in permitted areas, such as the springs in the state parks, and keep children and pets away from the edge of other lakes. In an emergency, call 911.
Etiquette tips
Leave an 18% to 20% tip at the table
In the United States, the tip is part of the server's pay, and in a restaurant with table service the custom is 18% to 20% of the bill.
Count the tax before the register
The price on the tag and the one on the ticket calendar come without the 6.5% tax, which shows up only at payment. It is not a cashier's mistake: it is the custom in the United States, where the advertised price comes without tax and the rate changes by state and county.
Stay out of the water in manatee season
At Blue Spring, from mid-November to March, the spring is the manatees' winter refuge, and swimming and any activity in the water are prohibited. They can be seen from the boardwalk.
Mistakes to avoid

Buying the ticket without checking the date
Booking flights and hotel and only then buying the ticket. At Disney and Universal, the price of the day changes with demand: in 2026, the same Magic Kingdom day runs from US$139 to US$209. Moving the trip by a week can pay for Lightning Lane.
Leaving Lightning Lane for the last minute
Multi Pass lets you hold up to three attraction selections at a time.
Assuming Express works everywhere
Universal's Express does not work on the Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure or on the Dragon Racer's Rally at Epic Universe, and there is no unlimited version at Epic Universe. The free unlimited Express at Universal's three Premier hotels is valid at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, not at Epic Universe.
Going to the springs without a reservation
Arriving at Blue Spring or Wekiwa on a weekend and finding the entrance closed because of crowding. Since July 15, 2026, Blue Spring requires an advance entry reservation, and Wekiwa also uses reservations.
Counting on SunRail on Saturday
Planning Winter Park and downtown by train on a weekend. SunRail has no regular service on Saturdays and Sundays and does not go to the airport or the parks.
Packing in too many parks back to back
Doing five or six park days with no break in the summer heat and humidity. The lines, the walking, and the afternoon rain wear you out more than they seem to when planning, and a no-park day in the middle, in Winter Park or at a spring, makes the rest of the week hold up.

Where to stay
- Walt Disney World and Lake Buena Vista · Families and anyone spending most of the trip at Disney · $$$: Disney's hotels have free buses, boats, monorail, or Skyliner to the parks, free parking at the parks, and Lightning Lane booking seven days before arrival. In exchange, the rate is higher and almost nothing is near the Orlando outside the parks. This advance-purchase benefit also applies to selected partner hotels; check the list and eligibility in My Disney Experience.
- Universal area · Anyone who will focus the trip on Universal · $$$: The company's hotels are next to the parks and CityWalk, and the three Premier hotels include unlimited Express at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, but not at Epic Universe. Those rates run between US$360 and 800 in 2026.
- International Drive · Anyone who will split the days among Disney, Universal, and SeaWorld · $$: It lies between the two complexes, with many chain hotels, restaurants, and buses to the airport. With a car, the parks are a short drive; without one, it depends on buses and rideshare.
- Kissimmee and US-192 · Little money, with a car · $: The budget hotels and motels closest to Disney are on US-192, south of the complex. The avenue is wide and built for cars, and there is nothing to do on foot.
- Downtown and Winter Park · Anyone who comes to Orlando for a reason other than the parks, or spends only a few days at them · $$: It is the part of the region where you can walk around, with Lake Eola, Park Avenue, and neighborhood restaurants. Disney is about 32 km away, via I-4, and almost every park day requires a car or rideshare.
$: hostel bed, US$27 on average · $$: mid-range hotel, US$220–265 a night, plus 12.5% taxes · $$$: Disney and Universal complex hotels, US$360–800 a night · 2026-10-15
Districts
Downtown and Lake Eola
The commercial and administrative center, with Lake Eola, Church Street, and the Kia Center arena, home of the Orlando Magic basketball team. LYMMO buses run free through downtown, and SunRail's Church Street station links the neighborhood to Winter Park on weekdays. It suits anyone who wants to see the city outside the parks and go out at night without a car.
Mills 50
The name comes from the crossing of Mills Avenue and State Road 50, Colonial Drive, just north of downtown. Vietnamese refugees settled there in the 1970s, and the neighborhood is also called Little Saigon. It has a concentration of Vietnamese and other Asian restaurants, murals, and small bars.
Winter Park
A neighboring city to the north, with 29,795 residents, whose land was subdivided in 1881 and which was incorporated in 1887. It has Park Avenue, with shops and restaurants, Central Park with the train station, Rollins College, from 1885, the Morse Museum, and lakes joined by canals. It is the easiest place to get around on foot in the region.
International Drive
A 17.9 km avenue southwest of downtown, opened in the 1960s to serve a hotel and now full of hotels, chain restaurants, outlets, and attractions. It has the Orange County Convention Center, the second largest in the United States, and SeaWorld at its southern end. It lies between Universal and Disney, with buses to the airport.

Universal area
The Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, and Volcano Bay parks, the CityWalk promenade, and the company's hotels are all together, southwest of downtown, between downtown and Disney. Epic Universe is a few kilometers to the south, with its own parking. It suits anyone who will spend most of the trip at Universal.
Walt Disney World and Lake Buena Vista
The Disney complex has four parks, two water parks, dozens of hotels, and the Disney Springs shopping district, with free parking. Inside it there are buses, boats, a monorail, and the Skyliner gondola. It is about 32 km from downtown Orlando and is a city apart, where you can spend the whole trip without seeing Orlando.
Kissimmee and US-192
South of Disney, US-192 has budget hotels and motels aimed at people going to the parks. It is where you sleep cheapest near Disney, but almost everything depends on a car. The film The Florida Project was shot at one of these motels.
Baldwin Park
A residential neighborhood built on the site of the former Orlando naval training center, closed in 1999, with neighborhood shops and restaurants. It is useful for understanding the Orlando of people who live and work in the city.
Eatonville
A small town about 10 km north of downtown, incorporated in 1887 as one of the first Black-governed towns in the United States. The writer Zora Neale Hurston grew up there and used it as a setting. It has the Zora Neale Hurston National Museum of Fine Arts and the annual winter festival.
History
1823–1842 · Seminole land and war
The Treaty of Moultrie Creek, in 1823, set aside much of central Florida for the Seminoles. The policy of removal to the west led to the Second Seminole War, and on November 9, 1838, the Army built Fort Gatlin and abandoned it the following year.
1843–1857 · From Jernigan to Orlando
In 1843, Aaron Jernigan settled near Lake Holden, and the post office opened in 1850 took the family's name. In 1857 the post office moved to the present downtown and was renamed Orlando. The origin of the name is disputed: the most accepted version ties it to James Speer and to Shakespeare's play As You Like It.
1875–1895 · The golden age of the orange
Orlando was incorporated as a town on July 31, 1875, with 85 residents, and as a city in 1885. For two decades it was the center of Florida's citrus industry, until the freezes of 1894 and 1895 destroyed the independent groves. Production concentrated in a few hands and moved south, and many residents left the state.
1920–1945 · Subdivisions and air bases
The real estate boom of the 1920s created dozens of neighborhoods around downtown and ended with the hurricanes of the late decade and the Great Depression. In World War II, the Orlando Army Air Base and the Pinecastle field brought thousands of service members.
1956–1962 · Missiles and an airport
Martin Marietta, today Lockheed Martin, opened a plant in the city in 1956. In 1962, the Orlando Jetport, predecessor of the international airport, began operating on part of McCoy Air Force Base, and that is where the code MCO comes from.
1964–1971 · Disney buys the land and opens the park
Starting in April 1964, Walt Disney Productions bought land southwest of the city through shell companies, to avoid speculation. Walt Disney announced the project in 1965, and Walt Disney World opened on October 1, 1971, with the Magic Kingdom.
1973–1998 · A city of parks
SeaWorld opened in 1973, EPCOT in 1982, Hollywood Studios in 1989, Universal Studios Florida in 1990, and Animal Kingdom in 1998. Tourism became the center of the region's economy.
2016 · The attack on the Pulse nightclub
On June 12, 2016, a gunman killed 49 people at the gay nightclub Pulse and died at the scene. The city approved the purchase of the site in late 2023; the building was demolished on March 18, 2026, and the permanent US$12 million memorial is planned for 2027.
2025 · Epic Universe and the visitor record
Universal opened Epic Universe on May 22, 2025, its third theme park in the city. That same year, Orlando received 76.7 million visitors, a historic record, despite a 2.4% drop in international arrivals.
Complete history
A fort, a post office, and the name from a play
Orlando was born of a war. The Treaty of Moultrie Creek, in 1823, set aside much of central Florida for the Seminoles, and the removal law of 1830 opened the Second Seminole War. Fort Gatlin, built in 1838, lasted a year, but it drew settlers: the Jernigans arrived in 1843, and the settlement took the family's name until 1857, when the post office moved to the county courthouse square and was renamed Orlando. The most accepted explanation for the name is that of the settler James Speer, who is said to have been thinking of the character in Shakespeare's As You Like It. The other, that of a soldier named Orlando Reeves killed near Lake Eola, has a marker on the lakeshore, but no military record confirms that this soldier existed.
Oranges, frost, and air bases
Between 1875 and 1895, Orlando was the center of Florida's citrus industry. The freezes of the winter of 1894 to 1895 ended that phase: the independent groves died, the big growers moved the business to the south of the state, and a good share of the residents left. The city remade itself as a winter destination and, in the 1920s, as a subdivision boom, with dozens of new neighborhoods around downtown. World War II brought the air bases, and the Cold War the defense industry: Martin Marietta arrived in 1956, and McCoy Air Force Base, to the south, received bombers in the 1960s and ceded part of its land to the civilian airport.
Why Disney chose Orlando
Disney began buying land in 1964, through shell companies, and put together about 27,000 acres, close to 110 km², across Orange and Osceola counties. The distance from the coast weighed in the choice: inland, the hurricane risk is lower than in Miami or Tampa. In 1967, the state created the Reedy Creek district, which gave the company local-government powers over the land, and the Magic Kingdom opened in 1971. Orlando's population and economy grew rapidly from then on, and the city spread toward the parks, along I-4 and International Drive.
The second generation of parks and the city today
Universal arrived in 1990 and began competing for the same visitor: Islands of Adventure opened in 1999, the Harry Potter area in 2010, and Epic Universe in 2025. In June 2023, the Reedy Creek district was replaced by the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District. The city outside the parks has also changed: refugees from the Vietnam War settled in Orlando in the 1970s and formed the Mills 50 neighborhood, and the region now has the largest Puerto Rican population in Florida. The attack on the Pulse nightclub, in 2016, became part of the city's memory, with a permanent memorial under construction at the site.
The airport code, MCO, comes from McCoy, the air base where the civilian airport began operating in 1962.
Geography and shape of the city
A plain of lakes on limestone
Orlando occupies a low, wet plain, 27 m above sea level, with hundreds of lakes, swamps, and flooded areas; the largest lake in the region is Apopka. The bedrock is porous limestone, and rainwater slowly dissolves it: that is why the region has sinkholes, holes that open when the roof of a cavity gives way. The most famous opened in May 1981 in Winter Park and reached about 98 m across. The same rock holds the aquifer that feeds the springs north of the city, such as Wekiwa, which releases about 159 million liters of water a day at 22 °C.
Two cities on the same map
Downtown Orlando lies between Marks Street to the north and Kaley Avenue to the south, with Lake Eola and Church Street as its historic core. To the north are Mills 50 and Winter Park, and Baldwin Park was built on a former naval base. Tourist Orlando begins to the southwest: I-4 runs diagonally down to International Drive, which is 17.9 km long, passes the Universal area, and reaches Walt Disney World, about 32 km from downtown, already at the Kissimmee line. The international airport is 9.7 km southeast of downtown, and Epic Universe a few kilometers south of the other Universal parks.
Humid heat, afternoon storms, and hurricanes
The climate is humid subtropical. In January, the average high is 22 °C and the low 10 °C; in July, the high reaches 33 °C, and in August the low is 23 °C. It rains 1,307 mm a year, almost all of it from May to October, especially from June to September, in short, heavy storms in the late afternoon; November is the driest month. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, and the city, being inland, gets the storm already weakened, but does not escape it: in October 2024, Hurricane Milton closed the Disney parks and the airport.
Orlando's limestone bedrock is the same that feeds the springs to the north and that, in 1981, opened a 98 m wide sinkhole in Winter Park.
Culture
Tiffany in Winter Park and the Fringe festival
The region's most important art collection is in Winter Park, at the Morse Museum, which holds the most complete collection of the work of Louis Comfort Tiffany, with the 1893 chapel. In Orlando, Loch Haven Park brings together the Orlando Museum of Art, the Orlando Family Stage, and the Lowndes Shakespeare Center theater, and is home to the Orlando Fringe, a theater festival founded in 1992, the oldest of its kind still running in the United States, which fills 14 days in May. Downtown, the performance hall is the Dr. Phillips Center.
Eatonville and Zora Neale Hurston
Eatonville, incorporated in 1887 about 10 km north of downtown, was one of the first self-governing Black towns in the United States. The writer Zora Neale Hurston grew up there and put it at the center of the 1937 novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. Since 1990 the town has kept the Zora Neale Hurston National Museum of Fine Arts, and every winter it holds an arts festival in her honor.
Communities that changed the city
Today's Orlando is much more Latino and Asian than the postcard of the parks suggests. The Hispanic share of the city went from 17.5% in 2000 to 32.9% in 2020, and the region has the largest Puerto Rican population in Florida. Mills 50, north of downtown, grew out of the arrival of Vietnamese refugees in the 1970s. Since 2016, the attack on the Pulse nightclub and the city's response, with vigils and a memorial under construction, have been part of the identity of the local LGBT community.
Sports and simulation
The Orlando Magic play NBA basketball at the Kia Center, and Orlando City and the Orlando Pride play soccer at Inter&Co Stadium, in the men's and women's leagues. Camping World Stadium, the former Citrus Bowl, hosts college football games at the end of the year. Outside tourism, the region is a hub of the military simulation and training industry, around the University of Central Florida.
Festivals and events
EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival, August 27 to November 21, 2026
In its 31st edition, kiosks around the World Showcase sell small portions of food and drink from various countries, paid separately from EPCOT admission. The Eat to the Beat concert series is included with admission.
Halloween Horror Nights, fall
Nights of haunted houses and shows at Universal Studios Florida, held since 1991. The 2026 edition has ten haunted houses; dates and tickets are on Universal's website.
Howl-O-Scream, September and October
SeaWorld Orlando's Halloween event, with its own evening ticket. In 2026 it ran on select nights from September 11 to October 31, and in October the ticket bought online for a set date started at US$47.99.
Orlando Fringe, May
Fourteen days of independent theater at Loch Haven Park and in venues around the city, since 1992. In the visual arts show, all the money from sales goes to the artists.
Zora Neale Hurston Festival, winter
Arts and humanities festival in Eatonville, in honor of the writer who grew up in the town. Check the edition's dates on the organization's website.
Books and films
Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937), Zora Neale Hurston
The novel begins and ends in Eatonville, the Black town north of Orlando where Hurston grew up, and crosses rural Florida of the early 20th century, up to the 1928 hurricane on Lake Okeechobee. It shows the region before the parks and the highways.
The Florida Project (2017), Sean Baker
Shot at a budget motel on US-192 in Kissimmee, about 10 km from Walt Disney World, the film follows a girl and her mother who live there, next to the tourism that pays the region's bills. Willem Dafoe was nominated for an Oscar for his role as the motel manager.
Married to the Mouse: Walt Disney World and Orlando (2003 paperback edition), Richard E. Foglesong
A Yale University Press book on the relationship between Disney and Orlando's government since the 1960s: the secret land purchase, the powers of the Reedy Creek district, and what the city gained and lost from the park. Not translated into Portuguese.
Frequently asked questions
Orlando: Can you get from the airport to the parks without a car?
You can use rideshare or buses, with transfers: LYNX links Terminal A to downtown on route 11 and to International Drive on route 42, for US$2 a ride, with one free transfer within 90 minutes. For the onward journey, route 38 serves Universal/International Drive, and routes 56 and 300 serve the Disney area; check connections and your park’s stop with LYNX. There is no train to the parks, and Disney’s free airport-to-hotel transport ended in January 2022.
Orlando: How many days should you stay?
Five days: two at Disney, two at Universal with the park-to-park ticket, and a no-park day in the middle, in Winter Park, at Lake Eola, and in Mills 50. With just one day, I'd pick the Magic Kingdom, buy the Lightning Lane Multi Pass, and arrive an hour before opening.
Orlando: What is the day trip to the Kennedy Space Center like?
The NASA visitor complex is in Merritt Island, 72 km east, about 1 hour by car. A one-day ticket costs US$77 per adult, parking US$15 per car, and it is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.: leave Orlando early to fit it all in.
Orlando: Does the advertised price include tax and tip?
No: in Orange County, the 6.5% sales tax is charged on top of the advertised price, park tickets included. In a restaurant with table service, the tip is 18% to 20% of the bill. Lodging taxes total 12.5%; also ask about any daily hotel fees.
Orlando: When is the best time to go?
November to April, the dry and cooler season. February to April have the highest hotel rates, and the busiest holidays, such as New Year's, have the most expensive one-day tickets.
