AsiaKyotoKyoto, Japan’s imperial capital from 794 to 1869, has about 1,600 Buddhist temples, Zen gardens and Fushimi Inari shrine in a basin ringed by mountains. AsiaOsakaOsaka brings together markets, counters and restaurants around Kita and Minami, its two main centres linked by the subway. A trading port in the Edo period, it now combines street food, shopping arcades and stage comedy.

AsiaHiroshimaIn Hiroshima, the memorial park and museum sit at the center of a flat city that gets around by streetcar and roots for the Carp, its baseball team. Founded in 1589 in the delta of the Ōta River, it was in 1945 the first city struck by an atomic bomb, and today has 1.19 million residents.
