Who it is for

For anyone who wants pre-Hispanic, colonial and beach Mexico, with market food along the way.

Not for anyone who only wants to rest, since the first half is cities and museums.

The strategy

Mexico City comes first and takes four days. Oaxaca sits in the middle, a short flight away, and Tulum closes the trip with beach and cenotes.

What you will see

  • Templo Mayor, Mexico City. Ruins of Tenochtitlan's double temple, rediscovered in 1978 by electricians who hit the 3.2 m Coyolxauhqui monolith.
  • Monte Albán, Oaxaca. Zapotec capital founded around 500 BC atop a ridge leveled by hand, 400 m above the valley, 10 km west of the city.
  • Tulum Archaeological Site, Tulum. The walled Maya city overlooks the Caribbean coast; according to INAH, the buildings visible today mainly belong to the Middle and Late Postclassic, between 1250 and 1550.
