Who it is for
For anyone who wants the Byzantine and Ottoman layers of Istanbul and ancient Egypt on the same trip.
Not for anyone traveling in summer, since the heat in Luxor limits time outdoors.
The strategy
Istanbul comes first, and a two-hour flight leads to Cairo. Luxor closes the trip, with visits early in the morning.
What you will see
- Hagia Sophia, Istanbul. Basilica completed in 537, a mosque from 1453, a museum from 1935 to 2020, and a mosque again since July 2020.
- Giza pyramids and the Sphinx, Cairo. Three 4th Dynasty pyramids (about 2560–2510 BCE).
- Karnak, Luxor. Ancient Egypt's largest religious complex, with about 2 km² built and rebuilt over 1,500 years.
