AfricaFezIn the Fez medina, with 9,400 lanes and no cars, you reach almost everything from the upper gate by walking downhill. Morocco's former capital, founded in 789, holds the Qarawiyyin, founded in 857–859 and considered the oldest continuously operating school in the world.

AfricaCasablancaCasablanca is Morocco's Atlantic port and economic capital, and the draws are the Hassan II Mosque, the art deco center and the street-facing cafés. It has Africa's densest art deco center, an 18th-century medina and a 210 m minaret over the sea.

AfricaSaharaIn Morocco's Sahara, the world's largest hot desert, the trip runs through oases, rammed-earth villages and the dunes of Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga. It lies south of the Atlas, near the border with Algeria, and less than a fifth of the Sahara is dune: the rest is rock and gravel.
