This allows visiting interiors without turning every meal into a rushed interval between buses. Comino can add a sixth day, with reservation and sea conditions confirmed. For beaches and rest in Gozo, I would add overnight stays there; I would not try to combine all Gozo and the Blue Lagoon in one outing.

How the guide reaches this number

April to June and September to October are recommended for walking around towns, visiting sites and reserving a sea outing when weather allows. Hotter, drier summers call for sun protection and breaks, especially at temples and waterfronts. Rain and wind matter more when organising the cooler months and can affect boats in any season. A cultural trip can work in winter with flexibility; swimming, Comino and a specific crossing should not be commitments upheld against sea conditions.

What Nilo thinks
I would set aside five full days for a first Malta visit, based in Valletta or Floriana: Valletta, Birgu and a southern site, Mdina with Rabat, southwest coast temples and a day in Gozo.

I would choose Malta for a trip where the route between towns also helps explain history. From Valletta's gardens, Birgu appears across the Grand Harbour; in Mdina, the visit turns to streets of an inland fortified core. The temples and Hypogeum require another reading, long before the Order of St John. This variety allows alternating an art morning, a crossing and a meal without seeking long distances. I would simply take care with the map's scale: boats, waiting and the last bus still take part of the day, even in a small archipelago.

Nilo's tips

Book the Hypogeum first

I would use actual availability to organise the Paola day. The audiovisual ticket and site visit need distinguishing before purchase.

Check the bus card's full name

I would distinguish Explore Adult – 7 Day from Explore Flex offers. Airport Direct is included in unlimited-travel cards; excluding tallinja Direct does not automatically exclude airport TD4.

Separate QR code and boat for Comino

I would confirm the landing reservation and transport as two parts of the same outing. One purchase should not be treated as proof of the other.

Choose one interior per afternoon

I would compare palace and war museum by interest, preserving the walk and breaks in Valletta.

What to see

Birgu's waterfront seen from the marina, with moored sailboats, the pale stone churches behind and reflections in calm water.
Birgu (Vittoriosa)

Birgu (Vittoriosa)

EssentialPort Region · Half a day or more

One of the Three Cities across the Grand Harbour, it combines historic streets, the waterfront and the approach to Fort St Angelo. Walking through Birgu has its own identity and does not oblige you to visit Isla and Bormla as three museums in sequence. The crossing depends on the chosen port and operator; boats for Gozo and urban ferries have different destinations.

It offers its own reading of Grand Harbour and allows you to explore streets beyond the capital.

Check access

The Baroque Main Gate of Mdina in the middle of the stone walls, with the access bridge and two people walking in.
Mdina

Mdina

EssentialWestern Region · Half a day or more

The inland walled town reveals streets, palaces and the contrast between the fortified core and Rabat just outside. It suits walking while respecting residential areas. Check return transport for the end of the day; sleeping here is a separate logistical choice rather than an extension of Valletta's harbour base. Entry to the urban core does not include every museum and church.

The walled core and its relationship with Rabat justify a day in the interior.

Check access

Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum

EssentialPaola · One to two hours

The prehistoric underground funerary complex in Paola has controlled visits and timed admission. Book early with Heritage Malta: an audiovisual exhibition ticket is not a visit through the site. When consulted in October 2026, the regular rate for adults aged 18 to 59 was €35. Children under six cannot enter; the archaeological site is not wheelchair accessible. The operator requires comfortable closed shoes, prohibits photography and requests arrival 15 minutes early.

The prehistoric underground experience is significant and depends on a confirmed ticket and suitable access conditions.

Check access

Ħaġar Qim

Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra Archaeological Park

EssentialQrendi · Half a day or more

The park brings together two temple complexes on the southwest coast, with an interpretation centre and a walk between them. The visit reveals prehistoric architecture beside the seascape, on stretches still exposed to wind and heat despite protective shelters. Choose suitable footwear and confirm the accessible route if mobility is restricted. Do not treat the second temple as a room beside the first ticket office.

The two temple ensembles and landscape justify an archaeological day with time allowed for travel.

Check access

The fortified Cittadella of Victoria, on Gozo, on its hilltop, with the cathedral, above the sand-coloured houses of the town.
Cittadella

Cittadella

EssentialVictoria · Half a day or more

The citadel above Victoria in Gozo offers streets, walls and institutions with their own tickets. The view from above locates the island landscape and combines well with lunch in Victoria. The outdoor route does not automatically include the cathedral, museums and visitor centre. Choose interiors according to interest and time available before the return boat.

It situates Gozo's history and landscape from Victoria, choosing interiors according to interest.

Fort St Angelo at the tip of Birgu, with its stone walls above the harbour and the town behind.
Fort St Angelo

Fort St Angelo

EssentialBirgu · Half a day or more

At the tip of Birgu's peninsula, the fort dominates the Grand Harbour and presents the harbour's military importance, including the Order of St John's role in the siege of 1565. It is a separate visit, with interpretation spaces and views, different from simply walking through Birgu. Heritage Malta recommends around two hours and listed admission at €10 per adult (18+) when consulted on 16 October 2026. The upper section involves stairs; confirm mobility and opening conditions with the operator. If choosing it, replace the day's other long visit rather than automatically adding it to the Hypogeum.

The fortification and views explain the defence of Grand Harbour, with visiting time and admission separate from a walk through Birgu.

Check access

A panorama of Dwejra Bay on Gozo, with dark water, anchored boats, the cliffs and Fungus Rock on the right.
Dwejra

Dwejra and the Inland Sea

EssentialOne to two hours

On Gozo's west coast, Dwejra brings together cliffs, geological depressions and the Inland Sea, connected to the sea by a natural tunnel. Observe the landscape from permitted routes; the tower and Fungus Rock islet are distinct landmarks within it. The Azure Window collapsed in 2017 and is not an arch still standing. Boat trips through the tunnel depend on the sea and are booked separately; the landscape can be visited without sailing or entering the water. For the Gozo day, choose Dwejra instead of Ġgantija with transport and return to the port confirmed, or add an overnight stay to explore the island with more time.

The coastal formations and Inland Sea add geology to a Gozo day as an alternative to Ġgantija’s archaeology.

Upper Barrakka Gardens

Upper Barrakka Gardens

Worth a visitValeta · Up to half an hour

The viewpoint explains Valletta's position facing the Grand Harbour and Three Cities. It makes a good stop during a walk, exposed to sun and wind. The view does not automatically include visiting the lower battery or a boat crossing. To continue to the sea terminal, check access by lift or the downhill route, remembering that the city stands above the water.

The view explains the capital's position facing Grand Harbour and fits into the walk.

Nilo’s itinerary

Start with the basic programme and choose extensions for the time you have.

Plan my days in the app ↗
  1. Day 1 · Valletta, co-cathedral and Grand Harbour

    1. Begin the first full day from accommodation in Valletta or Floriana. Adjust the day order so St John's does not fall on a Sunday or public holiday. If arriving through the land terminal, observe Tritons’ Fountain and enter through City Gate, respecting circulation in the square.

    2. Visit St John’s Co-Cathedral with time for the interior; do not count on the adjoining museum, closed for works in the notice consulted. Have lunch in the capital.

    3. Then choose the Grand Master’s Palace if its open rooms interest you, or Fort St Elmo for military history. You do not need to enter both that afternoon. The National Museum of Archaeology is another alternative for those wanting to see original objects related to the temples; choose one of these lengthy indoor visits.

    4. Finish at Upper Barrakka Gardens and return to the same base. If your flight arrived late, keep this programme for the following full day, adding arrival outside the circuit.

  2. Day 2 · Birgu and one prehistoric choice in the south

    1. Cross the Grand Harbour on the appropriate urban service if operating, or use a bus to Birgu. Walk its streets and waterfront without trying to complete all the Three Cities.

    2. Have lunch and continue to the Paola or Tarxien sector with transport checked. With a Hypogeum reservation, organise the day around its time and arrive 15 minutes early in closed shoes. The reservation may require reversing morning and afternoon.

    3. Without a Hypogeum ticket, choose Tarxien's prehistoric complex with confirmed opening. It offers a different experience rather than a replacement visit to the underground site.

    4. Military-history alternative: allow around two hours for Fort St Angelo and a walk in Birgu, replacing the long Paola/Tarxien visit. If you already have a Hypogeum ticket, keep the reserved time and leave the fort for another period; do not squeeze both into a transport interval.

    5. Harbour alternative: without a fixed-time Hypogeum reservation, Marsaxlokk can replace the Paola/Tarxien choice with lunch and a waterfront walk. Confirm transport and return from Birgu or via the base; do not count on a direct bus between every sector.

    6. Return to sleep in Valletta or Floriana. Do not add Comino to this day.

  3. Day 3 · Mdina and Rabat

    1. Leave Valletta C2 for Mdina on Malta Public Transport route 51, checking the timetable and Mdina stop, or use arranged transport. The timetable reference is around half an hour in the vehicle on some departures; add waiting and traffic. Explore the walled core in the morning, respecting residential doors and streets.

    2. Have lunch in Mdina or Rabat and visit St Paul’s Catacombs if the underground route suits you. Choose only one additional interior according to interest and energy. Mdina's cathedral and museum can replace another lengthy indoor visit, subject to opening outside Sundays/public holidays and religious restrictions.

    3. Use the rest of the afternoon in the area's streets and cafés and confirm the return to the same address in Valletta or Floriana. If you prefer cliffs, reduce the interior programme and replace part of this afternoon with Dingli, with complete transport to a permitted access point and a confirmed return. Do not cross to Gozo at the end of this programme simply to return at night.

  4. Day 4 · Ħaġar Qim, Mnajdra and an afternoon buffer

    1. Leave your base for Ħaġar Qim/Mnajdra archaeological park. The bus reference is route 74 from Valletta A5 to Hagar in Qrendi; confirm the variant, visit time and return before leaving. Start at the interpretation centre and arrange the walk between temples according to opening, heat and mobility.

    2. Bring water and keep a lunch break after the route. Conservation shelters do not remove exposure throughout the park.

    3. Return to Valletta or Floriana and use the afternoon for a museum or another part of town that did not fit at the start. This buffer allows rearranging a programme affected by rain, wind or a service. Coastal alternative: replace that return for cultural sightseeing with the Blue Grotto only with boat operation or the chosen land viewpoint and return transport confirmed; do not add Dingli or Marsaxlokk to this afternoon. Sleep in the same base.

  5. Day 5 · Gozo, the citadel and Ġgantija

    1. Leave your accommodation early for Valletta's Gozo Highspeed terminal, with ticket and return confirmed. The 45-minute reference covers only sailing to Mġarr.

    2. In Mġarr, take route 301 from Vapur beside the terminal to Victoria, or a taxi. Visit the Cittadella, choosing interiors by interest, and have lunch in Victoria. Add walking, waiting and traffic to the 45-minute sailing.

    3. For Ġgantija, check circular route 307 from Victoria Bay 3 to the Ggantija stop in Xagħra, with opening and return checked. Plan the return to Victoria and port connection. If the combination does not protect the boat connection, reserve a taxi or stay only in Victoria and its citadel.

    4. Landscape alternative: replace Ġgantija with Dwejra. Route 311 leaves Victoria Bay 1 for Dwejra stop; the timetable consulted shows around 17–18 minutes aboard some services, plus waiting and walking. Confirm both directions and the 301 connection to the port. Walk only along permitted approaches and return with a buffer; an Inland Sea boat is optional and depends on the sea. Do not add Dwejra after the temples out of obligation. Choose the Blue Hole and Fungus Rock land viewpoints according to conditions, or Dwejra Tower's interior if open, shortening the rest of the walk. Diving is not included in this period.

    5. Devotional alternative: Ta’ Pinu can replace Ġgantija or the Dwejra outing; use the 308 from Victoria Bay 3 to Pinu with return checked, or a prearranged taxi. Preserve the connection to Mġarr without visiting all three areas in one afternoon.

    6. Return to Mġarr with an embarkation buffer and go back to the same Malta accommodation. If sea services are cancelled, use a town day and rearrange Gozo only if another safe date is available; do not risk missing your flight to fit in the island visit.

Food

Pastizzi

Filled flaky pastry, often with ricotta or peas, suitable for a snack between visits. Confirm filling and preparation: appearance does not settle restrictions on dairy or animal-derived ingredients.

Ftira

The flat bread with a distinct crust may be filled with tomato, olive oil, tuna, capers and other Mediterranean ingredients. UNESCO recognises the culture of making and sharing this bread. Gozitan ftira may take a different baked form; check what is offered rather than expecting the same sandwich on every island.

Rabbit and taverna dishes

Rabbit preparations form part of local cuisine and call for a seated meal. Ask about sauce, accompaniments and portion size; the name of a typical dish does not guarantee availability in every establishment or every day.

Fish and seasonal food

In harbour towns, compare the fish on offer with clear units and prices. A fresh-fish label does not give the total for a fish charged by weight, and species and preparation change with supply.

Where to eat

  • Valletta and Floriana

Pastizzi suit a quick stop; filled ftira is another option between visits. For a long meal, look for Maltese dishes with ingredients explained and check the service total.

  • Rabat

A bakery or snack shop offers a chance to try pastizzi on the Mdina day. Compare fillings and avoid buying several without knowing their size; cheese and peas do not explain every pastry ingredient.

  • Birgu and the Grand Harbour waterfront

Choose a meal with a clear menu and per-unit prices, using the walk's location without crossing the island for lunch. For fish sold by weight, confirm the portion before preparation.

  • Victoria and Xagħra, Gozo

Use lunch to explore baked preparations, cheeses and the local version of ftira. Do not count on a meal included in the ferry or archaeological park ticket; allow time between land journeys.

Day trips

Comino and the Blue Lagoon

As a departure reference for Comino, reach Ċirkewwa in northern Malta by Malta Public Transport checked for your date or an arranged taxi. This land access from Valletta is separate from the sailing. Ebsons Comino Ferries from Ċirkewwa advertises around 20 minutes each way to the Blue Lagoon; that is the duration of this service, rather than every outing from Sliema or Gozo. Confirm the exact boarding point, day's operation and return, without treating a published departure as guaranteed space. Before buying, match the boat with the free access reservation on the Blue Lagoon portal: the QR code is separate from the ticket. It is an optional sixth day, subject to the sea, rather than an addition to the Gozo day.

Money

The turquoise water of Comino's Blue Lagoon with an anchored boat, the Cominotto islet behind and the dirt path in front.
Blue Lagoon

The currency is the euro. On 16 October 2026, St John's Co-Cathedral listed €15 per adult; the Hypogeum, €35 at the regular rate for ages 18 to 59, with separate categories for other ages and conditions. A sales page's starting price may be a child fare rather than an adult one. Free regulated access to the Blue Lagoon includes neither boat nor beach services. Also compare bus cards by coverage: seven-day Explore Adult cost €25 and excluded tallinja Direct, while Airport Direct is included in unlimited-travel cards according to the operator. The tallinja Direct exclusion should not automatically be applied to airport TD4; Explore Flex offers have other conditions. Confirm each purchase with the operator and count accommodation, meals, interiors and intended crossings separately.

Getting there and around

The Baroque Main Gate of Mdina in the middle of the stone walls, with the access bridge and two people walking in.
Mdina

The international airport uses code MLA. For a base in Valletta or Floriana, the reference is Airport Direct 4, identified as TD4, towards Valletta/Gozo Fast Ferry. Board at the signposted bus terminal after arrivals and choose the stop serving your accommodation; do not confuse the capital above the harbour with the sea terminal. Consult Malta Public Transport's timetable and notices for the day, especially for the return flight.

Malta Public Transport buses serve Malta and Gozo. On 16 October 2026, Explore Adult – 7 Day cost €25, was personal and covered daytime and night routes, excluding tallinja Direct. Airport Direct is a different category: the operator includes it in unlimited-travel cards, including its seven-day guidance; the TD4 abbreviation alone does not mean this airport bus is excluded. Explore Flex and its offers have their own inclusions and prices. Compare the full product and validate the travel card on every boarding.

The Gozo Highspeed sea connection from Valletta reaches Mġarr in around 45 minutes according to the operator. This excludes reaching the terminal and the onward bus or taxi in Gozo. The fast service differs from the Gozo Channel ferry between Ċirkewwa and Mġarr; choose the terminal compatible with your base and check the last return. Wind and operational notices can change services.

Urban ferries to Sliema and the Three Cities also have their own terminals and are subject to sea conditions. Consult the operator for boarding location and current times; if the boat does not operate, a bus or taxi will require more time. In Valletta, allow a buffer for the difference in level between town and water.

Driving is on the left. A car can help with rural areas, but parking, narrow streets and restrictions reduce its usefulness for the Valletta and Birgu days. For this first visit, prefer a connected base and check journeys before hiring a vehicle. Coastal and urban walks require checking pavements, stairs and heat, especially with reduced mobility.

For Mdina/Rabat, use route 51 from Valletta C2 to the Mdina stop as a reference; the consulted timetable shows some journeys of around half an hour in the vehicle, plus waiting and delays. For Ħaġar Qim/Mnajdra, route 74 leaves Valletta A5 and serves Hagar in Qrendi; check the variant and both directions, as the walk within the park follows afterwards. In Gozo, the 301 links Vapur beside Mġarr terminal with Victoria; from Victoria Bay 3, circular route 307 passes Ggantija in Xagħra. Also plan the return to the port, including waiting and changing in Victoria, or reserve a taxi when the combination does not protect the boat connection. These points are network references rather than a guarantee of immediate connections.

For Dwejra in Gozo, Malta Public Transport's reference is route 311 from Victoria Bay 1 to Dwejra. The timetable consulted on 16 October 2026 shows some departures with around 17–18 minutes in the vehicle; this excludes waiting, the coastal walk and the return to Mġarr. Combine the return to Victoria with route 301 or reserve a taxi when the connection leaves insufficient time for the boat. Dwejra replaces Ġgantija in the proposed day; a stay with more coast needs another day or overnight accommodation.

Safety

At transport points and busy places, keep belongings secure and avoid leaving luggage visible in a car. Plan the return after evening programmes, especially in bar areas. On the coast, observe signs, currents, swell and rocky access; do not jump from somewhere merely because others do. Sun and limited shade at sites and inlets require water and breaks. Respect sailing cancellations and maintain a buffer before your flight. For an emergency, the number is 112.

Etiquette tips

Churches and heritage

Bring clothing to cover shoulders according to the church's rules and respect services. At St John's, stilettos are not permitted on the historic floor.

Hypogeum access

Arrive at the requested time, wearing closed shoes and without expecting to take photographs. Conservation conditions are part of the visit, including for those who have already bought a ticket.

Community festas

Do not block bands, processions or residential entrances to take photographs. Confirm the programme and traffic arrangements before arriving by car.

Swimming areas

Respect marked zones and boat access. An inlet visited by boat is not automatically a lifeguarded beach.

Mistakes to avoid

Buying the Comino boat and assuming it guarantees the Blue Lagoon access QR code.

Booking St John's tourist visit for a Sunday or public holiday because Mass appears in the calendar.

Using Rabat without distinguishing the town beside Mdina from Victoria in Gozo.

Planning Gozo as if the 45-minute ferry included reaching the terminal, visiting temples and returning to the hotel.

Confusing tallinja Direct with Airport Direct: airport TD4 has its own inclusion rule for unlimited-travel cards.

Arriving at the Hypogeum with a child under six or open shoes expecting the ticket to allow an exception.

Where to stay

  • Valletta · A first cultural visit with several bus and boat journeys.: Allows walks to museums and the co-cathedral and departure from the land terminal or descent to the sea. Check slopes, stairs, the accommodation's lift and the luggage route. Bar streets and event areas may be noisy, and being central does not mean being at sea-terminal level.
  • Floriana · Visitors wanting proximity to Valletta with relatively simple land access.: Its position beside the capital's entrance helps plan buses and walking without relying on urban ferries. Check the street and time to terminals; the locality's name does not guarantee the same access from every address.
  • Sliema and Gżira · Visitors valuing varied services and accommodation outside the capital.: There is a choice of restaurants and transport, but travel to Valletta must account for buses or ferries and possible changes due to the sea. Assess noise, construction, nearby stops and the cost of returning at night. An advert with a view of Valletta is still on the opposite shore.
  • Victoria or another Gozo base · Visitors adding days to explore beyond the basic island outing.: An overnight stay avoids concentrating everything between two boats and helps explore towns and the coast. In return, departure through Malta airport requires crossing again and allowing for sea conditions. It is not the simplest base for repeating Valletta museums every day.

Districts

Valletta and Floriana

A base for museums, churches and bus connections. Valletta has slopes and stairs; Floriana can ease land access, but the exact street remains decisive for luggage and noise.

Birgu (Vittoriosa)

Three Cities

Birgu, Isla and Bormla are neighbouring towns facing the Grand Harbour. Birgu works as the focus of a walking day, choosing a fortification or museum according to interest.

Sliema and Gżira

An area of accommodation and services on the Marsamxett waterfront, useful for those valuing restaurant choice and bus routes. Reaching Valletta or Gozo depends on the terminal and service chosen, rather than the room's view.

Mdina

Mdina and Rabat

Paola, Tarxien and the south

The sector of the Hypogeum and temples, separate from the outing to the southwest coast at Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra. Group access by transport rather than counting only straight-line kilometres.

Gozo

Another island in the archipelago, with Mġarr as its sea gateway and Victoria as its urban reference. One day requires selection; a stay for beaches and villages needs its own overnight accommodation.

History

4th and 3rd millennia BC · Temples and funerary spaces

Prehistoric communities built megalithic temples and the underground complex of Ħal Saflieni, with different functions and visiting arrangements.

Antiquity and the Middle Ages · Mediterranean networks

Phoenicians, Romans and later powers placed the islands within navigation and exchange routes. Mdina and Rabat help reveal occupation predating the current capital.

1530 · The Order of St John

The Order's arrival transformed the archipelago's fortifications and centres of power.

1565–1566 · Siege and a new capital

After the Great Siege, the construction of Valletta created a planned, fortified city facing the harbours.

British period · Naval base and war

Military use and the Second World War left traces that can be explored at the Fort St Elmo museum and other collections.

1964–1974 · Independence and republic

Malta became independent in 1964 and a republic ten years later.

2020 and 2023 · Living heritage

The culture of ftira bread and the Maltese community festa were respectively inscribed as UNESCO intangible cultural heritage.

Complete history

The megalithic temples and Hypogeum belong to prehistory, rather than the work of the knights who later fortified the islands. The distinction changes the visit: at Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra, stone complexes stand in the landscape; at Ħal Saflieni, a controlled reservation grants access to an underground funerary complex. The archaeology museum adds objects and details without treating every remain as part of the same religion understood in all its aspects.

The Order of St John established itself in Malta in the 16th century. After the siege of 1565, Valletta was created with streets and defences planned for the peninsula between harbours. The urban layout, co-cathedral and palace help explain this power; looking towards Birgu across the water reveals that urban life on the Grand Harbour existed before the new capital.

The British period and the war added military uses, infrastructure and memory. Independence and the republic belong to the recent history of a country that continues to produce cultural life, beyond monuments. Bakeries, bands and local festas form part of this present, with community traditions extending beyond performances for visitors.

Geography and shape of the city

Valletta stands on a peninsula between the Grand Harbour and Marsamxett. Floriana adjoins its land entrance; Birgu, Isla and Bormla, the Three Cities, occupy the other side of the Grand Harbour. Sliema lies across the other stretch of water, with its own connection, and is not a neighbourhood of Valletta. Mdina and Rabat are inland on the main island; Paola and Tarxien lie in the southern part of the urban area. Gozo is another island: the boat arrives in Mġarr and the visit to Victoria or Xagħra continues by road. Comino and the Blue Lagoon require another sailing. The coast combines rock and beaches, and an urban waterfront guarantees neither sand nor safe swimming access.

Rabat beside Mdina is on the island of Malta; Victoria, also called Rabat, is in Gozo. Keep the destination's full name.

In Valletta, reaching the terminal includes descending from town and may involve a lift. Sailing does not begin at your accommodation's door.

Culture

Local festas bring together associations, bands, decorations, religious practices and other community activities. UNESCO's 2023 recognition concerns the festa tradition rather than a single identical programme in every village. Check the local calendar: the same street can change considerably between a festa evening and an ordinary afternoon.

Maltese and English appear in everyday life, but place names retain distinctive spellings and sounds. Birgu is also called Vittoriosa; Victoria in Gozo is also known as Rabat. That does not make it the same Rabat beside Mdina on the island of Malta. Keeping the full locality prevents choosing the wrong bus stop or museum.

Festivals and events

Local festas

The calendar spreads festas throughout the year, many in summer. Consult the locality and desired edition's programme for bands, celebrations, fireworks and road closures. Noise-sensitive travellers should consider the distance from accommodation to the route.

Holy Week and Easter

Movable dates with their own religious programme. Plan church visits and transport using that year's calendar; usual tourist opening hours may change.

Books and films

UNESCO film on the Maltese festa

The nomination film shows community work, bands and celebrations. It helps choose a locality and understand why a festa is more than a fireworks show for visitors.

Il-Ftira, UNESCO documentation

The film and entry present handmade bread production and its everyday circulation. They accompany a bakery stop without turning recognition into an establishment ranking.

Heritage Malta collections

Temple and war museum pages prepare different readings of prehistory, the Order of St John and the Second World War before choosing itinerary interiors.

Frequently asked questions

Malta: how many days and which base should I choose?

I would set aside five full days for a first Malta visit, based in Valletta or Floriana: Valletta, Birgu and a southern site, Mdina with Rabat, southwest coast temples and a day in Gozo.

Malta: how do I arrive from the airport and choose a bus card?

The international airport uses code MLA. For a base in Valletta or Floriana, the reference is Airport Direct 4, identified as TD4, towards Valletta/Gozo Fast Ferry. Board at the signposted bus terminal after arrivals and choose the stop serving your accommodation; do not confuse the capital above the harbour with the sea terminal. Consult Malta Public Transport's timetable and notices for the day, especially for the return flight. Malta Public Transport buses serve Malta and Gozo. On 16 October 2026, Explore Adult 7 Day cost €25, was personal and covered daytime and night routes, excluding tallinja Direct.

Malta: what conditions apply to visiting the Hypogeum?

The prehistoric underground funerary complex in Paola has controlled visits and timed admission. Book early with Heritage Malta: an audiovisual exhibition ticket is not a visit through the site. When consulted in October 2026, the regular rate for adults aged 18 to 59 was €35. Children under six cannot enter; the archaeological site is not wheelchair accessible. The operator requires comfortable closed shoes, prohibits photography and requests arrival 15 minutes early.

Malta: how should I organise a day in Gozo?

Allow a full day from Valletta or Floriana. Confirm outward and return Gozo Highspeed journeys; the published 45 minutes cover only navigation to Mġarr. Add terminal access, boarding, waiting and land transport. From Vapur beside the terminal, route 301 runs to Victoria, where you can visit the Cittadella and have lunch. Choose one outing after Victoria: Ġgantija on circular route 307 from Victoria Bay 3 to Ggantija; Dwejra on the 311 from Victoria Bay 1; or Ta’ Pinu on the 308 from Victoria Bay 3 to Pinu. Dwejra and Ta’ Pinu replace the temples, without adding all three areas in the afternoon. The roughly 17–18 minutes on some 311 services cover the vehicle only, plus waiting and walking. At Dwejra, use permitted approaches; an Inland Sea boat is optional and subject to sea conditions, and diving is not included in the walk. Confirm opening, route and return for each choice and the 301 connection to Mġarr, preserving a boarding buffer; without a useful combination, book a taxi or stay in Victoria alone. Return to the same Malta accommodation. If sea services are cancelled, use an urban programme and rearrange Gozo only for another safe date; do not risk your departure flight.

Malta: does the boat guarantee access to the Blue Lagoon?

Malta: can I visit St John’s on Sunday?

Valletta's co-cathedral brings together chapels of the Order of St John, a floor of tombstones and paintings, including works by Caravaggio. The interior deserves its own time beyond the facade. Tourist visits close on Sundays and public holidays; Mass does not mean the art route is open. When consulted on 16 October 2026, adult admission was €15 and the adjoining museum was closed for expansion and refurbishment. Confirm open areas and wear suitable clothing and permitted footwear; stilettos are not accepted.
