Lake Como
Three days among the villages of the central lake
Days Start with the basic programme and choose extensions for the time you have.
How the guide reaches this number
This allows walks, lunch and boat waits without rushing through villas in sequence. A day trip from Milan shows part of the lake but does not replace these three days. For Como, Brunate or longer walks, add time and reorganise the base; I would not force them into this itinerary.
3
When May to June and September; a good combination for gardens and boats, with possible rain and busy weekends.
How the guide reaches this number
May, June and September are recommended for combining boat outings and gardens, accepting possible rain and the need to check villa calendars. Spring flowering varies with the weather and has no guaranteed date. July and August require more attention to bookings and queues. Autumn brings shorter visiting days and hours. In winter, Como and Lecco retain urban life, but the villa-and-boat circuit needs different choices: confirm each opening instead of assuming summer’s offering.
Per person/day Compare nightly rates in your chosen base and boat tickets for crossing days.
How the guide reaches this number
Villa admission, private boats and waterside restaurants can change the budget considerably; if driving, also check whether the room includes parking.

What Nilo thinksI would reserve three days, with two or three nights in Varenna depending on arrival and departure times: one day for the village and Villa Monastero, another for Bellagio and Melzi, and a third to choose Balbianello or Carlotta. This allows walks, lunch and boat waits without rushing through villas in sequence. A day trip from Milan shows part of the lake but does not replace these three days. For Como, Brunate or longer walks, add time and reorganise the base; I would not force them into this itinerary. The villas stand on different shores, but the centre of Lake Como lets you connect them without changing hotels every day. Varenna combines its station with waterside lanes; Bellagio occupies the promontory opposite, and Tremezzina brings together gardens and former residences on the western shore. Boats are part of the outing and a timetable commitment.

I would choose a base near a quay and leave time for villages between visits. Melzi’s landscaped park, Carlotta’s collection and garden, and Balbianello’s promontory offer different experiences. Como adds cathedral, silk and modern architecture, but lies at another end of the lake and deserves a separate decision.

When to go
May to June and September; a good combination for gardens and boats, with possible rain and busy weekends.
How the year changes
May, June and September are recommended for combining boat outings and gardens, accepting possible rain and the need to check villa calendars. Spring flowering varies with the weather and has no guaranteed date. July and August require more attention to bookings and queues. Autumn brings shorter visiting days and hours. In winter, Como and Lecco retain urban life, but the villa-and-boat circuit needs different choices: confirm each opening instead of assuming summer’s offering.
Nilo's tips
Check the base’s address
I would ask the accommodation for directions from station or quay with luggage, including stairs and any transfer.
Choose tickets by content
At Balbianello, I would reserve even for the park alone. To enter the residence, I would choose the tour in Italian or English and allow for access and waiting. At Monastero, I would check house and garden calendars separately.
One sector per day
I would separate Bellagio from the western shore. Lunch and waiting for boats are part of the day even when villages look close.
A rainy day
I would consider Carlotta’s collections or an urban programme in Como, reconfirming access and travel; a wet garden and obscured views change the experience.

Villa Monastero
In Varenna, the house museum and garden reveal an old property transformed over centuries. The garden follows the shore, with ornamental vegetation and views over the water. In 2026 there is a garden-only ticket and another including the house; their opening calendars may differ. Check both before deciding.
The house and garden help explain how the lake’s residences changed, with easy access from Varenna.
Check access

Bellagio
The interest lies in streets descending to the harbour, the promontory’s position and walks towards Pescallo and Villa Melzi’s gardens. Allow time to leave the quay, eat and walk. Stairways and visitor flows can make a quick visit more demanding than it looks on a map.
The promontory and stepped streets give context to crossings in the central lake.
Check access

Villa del Balbianello
The FAI property occupies the Lavedo promontory in Lenno. Gardens, loggias and terraces make use of its position above the water; interiors add the residence’s collections. Reservations are compulsory for both park-only and villa-and-park visits. Interiors can only be visited on a guided tour of about 50 minutes in Italian or English; the booked time admits you to the property, and the ticket office gives the tour’s start time, with a wait of up to an hour. From Lenno, the short footpath is about 1 km uphill, partly on gravel, taking approximately 25 minutes according to FAI. It is unsuitable for pushchairs or people with walking difficulties. The water taxi from Lido di Lenno is paid, booked separately and not operated by FAI. Check calendar and availability before organising the crossing.
The promontory and interiors justify a day on the western shore for those choosing this option.
Check access

Villa Carlotta
In Tremezzo, it brings together artworks and a botanical park with areas of Italian design and later landscaping. A good choice for understanding the garden while also visiting a collection. The 2026 calendar reduces hours from 19 October and switches to selected dates after 8 November; do not extrapolate it to another year.
The combination of art and botanical park offers a sound alternative to Balbianello.
Check access

Varenna
The village on the eastern shore deserves exploring beyond the entrance to Villa Monastero. Walk between the harbour, waterfront, lanes and Piazza San Giorgio, observing how the houses fit between hillside and lake. Steps and narrow passages call for a route suited to your group’s mobility. Varenna-Esino station is outside the historic core; leave your luggage and check the route to your accommodation before starting the visits.
The streets and shore reveal the scale of the village chosen as a base.

Villa Olmo
The Neoclassical villa is a major landmark on Como’s waterfront. According to municipal information consulted in October 2026, the building was closed for restoration and the park only partly accessible. Plan around what is actually open, without relying on the interiors or a walk through the entire garden. The façade and lakeside position still help explain the monumental residences in the city; check notices and possible closures before walking there.
The façade and lakeside setting broaden the understanding of monumental residences on the southern branch.
Check access
Giardini di Villa Melzi
A landscaped park in Bellagio, with trees, sculptures and lakeside paths. The ensemble was created between 1808 and 1810. Public visits cover the gardens and spaces specified by the operator; do not expect access to the private residence. According to information checked in October 2026, the standard ticket is bought at the entrance and does not require a reservation.
It is the landscape-design visit that best complements the Bellagio day; it excludes the private residence.
Check access

Menaggio
The waterfront offers a stop less dependent on tickets, with a square and views towards Varenna’s shore. It works for lunch and a walk between boats, especially when already on the western shore. There is no need to add it to the same day as two villas.
It is a stop for walking and lunch on the western shore, without requiring another villa.
Check access
Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta
Como’s Duomo reveals the long construction begun in 1396 beside the Broletto and central streets. Visits must respect services and the cathedral’s access conditions. It works as the focus of a day in Como, separate from the garden circuit in the central lake.
The cathedral helps explain the city of Como on a day separate from the central circuit.

Nilo’s itinerary
Start with the basic programme and choose extensions for the time you have.
Plan my days in the app ↗Day 1 · Varenna and the garden on the eastern shore
Settle into Varenna. Arriving from Milano Centrale, get off at Varenna-Esino and leave luggage before visiting; the first day can start later without requiring a crossing.
Walk through the centre, Piazza San Giorgio and the waterfront. Have lunch in Varenna, leaving time to explore the lanes calmly.
Visit Villa Monastero according to the house and garden openings. If the house is closed, consciously choose the garden-only ticket. Those preferring the fortress and high view can choose Castello di Vezio instead of the villa after checking opening and the uphill effort. If arriving late, keep to the village and leave the larger visit for another period.
Stay on the same shore for dinner and confirm tomorrow’s boats. Overnight in Varenna.
Day 2 · Bellagio, gardens and Pescallo’s bay
Take the boat from Varenna to Bellagio with your return time already chosen. Reserve the morning for the centre and stepped streets, without carrying luggage for a hotel change.
Walk to the Giardini di Villa Melzi and visit the park; the residence is not part of the standard public visit. Villa Serbelloni’s park is another garden option, with mandatory booking and a guided visit in Italian or English. Allow around two hours, the first hour uphill; it can replace Melzi if effort, language and timing suit, preserving the return boat.
Have lunch in Bellagio. If the effort of the stairs is appropriate, follow the route to Pescallo and return to the harbour area; otherwise, stay on accessible waterfront promenades.
Return by boat with a buffer before the last available sailing. Dinner and second night in Varenna.
Day 3 · One villa in Tremezzina
Devote the day to the western shore. Choose in advance between Balbianello in Lenno and Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo; choose Balbianello for its promontory and residence collections, Carlotta for botany and art.
For Balbianello, reserve with FAI in advance even for the park alone; interiors require a tour in Italian or English. Arrange the scheduled boat to Lenno, connecting if necessary, and add access time: the short path from Lenno is about 1 km uphill and 25 minutes, partly on gravel. Water taxis cost extra and require a separate booking. Allow for a wait for the tour, whose start is given at the ticket office.
If choosing Carlotta, use the landing and walking route published by the operator for your date. Do not keep a Balbianello appointment at the same time.
Have lunch in your chosen villa’s locality and walk near the water, without adding another crossing out of obligation. Return to Varenna to collect luggage or sleep. For a train or flight, leave a buffer and remove an additional visit rather than relying on the last boat.
Food
Risotto al pesce persico
Rice served with perch fillets, often prepared with butter and sage. Versions differ; check the ingredients if you have dietary restrictions.
Missoltini
Agoni, lake fish preserved by drying and traditionally served with polenta. The concentrated, salty flavour differs from a fresh fillet.
Polenta uncia
Polenta enriched with cheese, butter and garlic. Associated with cooking around the lake and mountains, it makes a substantial lunch after walking.
Lavarello
A freshwater fish in Lario cuisine, prepared in different ways according to the menu. Ask about origin and preparation rather than assuming every fish served on the shore was caught there.
Where to eat
- Varenna and Bellagio
Look for a trattoria explaining how it prepares pesce persico or lavarello. The choice is justified by freshwater cooking; confirm origin, ingredients and dish price before sitting down.
- Menaggio and Tremezzina
Missoltini with polenta relates to traditional fish preservation. To avoid dried fish, look at polenta and cheese dishes; butter and cheese limit their suitability for some diets.
- Central Como
For a quick meal before the train, bakeries and takeaway food may be more practical than several courses. Check displayed prices and save a seated restaurant meal for when there is time instead of jeopardising a connection.

Day trips
Milan
From Varenna-Esino, the direct train to Milano Centrale covers 72 rail kilometres in about 64 minutes according to Trenord. Give the city its own day and include the urban journey from the station. Anyone who visited before arriving at the lake need not repeat this as a day trip.
Como: urban heritage and waterfront
Set aside a separate day for the southern branch. Calculate access from your base by boat or an actual available land connection, without treating Como as a stop on the short boat trip between the central villages. In the centre, combine the Duomo, Broletto and Casa del Fascio exterior; choose the Tempio Voltiano or Sant’Abbondio according to interest and opening. Villa Olmo requires considering restoration and the partly accessible park; Brunate and Baradello are further choices, with travel and climbing, rather than two compulsory stops after all the interiors.
Bellano and the Orrido
Choose a separate period on the eastern shore for Bellano and the gorge. Check the rail or boat connection for your date, the final leg and return before leaving Varenna. Check admission and walkway conditions. If choosing the Sentiero del Viandante, plan the walk separately with a map and effort assessment; it differs from arriving by transport and visiting the gorge.
Cernobbio and its villas
Devote another day to Cernobbio, calculating access and return from your chosen base. Select one main visit from Museo Villa Bernasconi, a cultural opening at Villa Erba or a booked guided visit to Villa Pizzo. All three have their own calendars and tickets; proximity on a map does not guarantee shared availability. Leave time to walk and have lunch, without crossing the lake again just to complete another villa.
Ossuccio and Isola Comacina
Allow separate time for the island and this part of Tremezzina. Confirm the boat to the island, return and admission; arriving at Ossuccio does not replace the crossing. On shore, observing the Santa Maria Maddalena bell tower adds a brief stop. This programme can occupy another day or replace a villa visit, rather than being added to Balbianello with incompatible reservations.
Lecco and the Manzoni route
Set aside a day for the eastern branch and confirm transport from Varenna for your date. Combine the centre, San Nicolò and the Torre Viscontea exterior; choose Villa Manzoni as the main interior when open. Climbing the bell tower is a separate option and can replace another commitment. To cover more places associated with the novel, use the local tourism itinerary and recalculate total time, rather than treating the entire route as already included here.
Colico, Piona or the fortifications
The northern sector requires its own day and confirmed transport. Choose Abbazia di Piona for monastic heritage and scenery, or Forte di Fuentes for military history, calculating the final leg from Colico centre or station. If you want to combine places, check access, calendars and journeys beforehand; the railway connection to Colico does not deliver visitors to either site’s entrance.
Where to begin
Varenna and the garden on the eastern shore

Settle into Varenna. Arriving from Milano Centrale, get off at Varenna-Esino and leave luggage before visiting; the first day can start later without requiring a crossing.
Bellagio, gardens and Pescallo’s bay

Take the boat from Varenna to Bellagio with your return time already chosen. Reserve the morning for the centre and stepped streets, without carrying luggage for a hotel change.
One villa in Tremezzina

Devote the day to the western shore. Choose in advance between Balbianello in Lenno and Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo; choose Balbianello for its promontory and residence collections, Carlotta for botany and art.
Money

The currency is the euro. Compare ticket options before prices: Villa Monastero’s regular 2026 adult rate is €13 for the garden or €15 for garden and house museum. During the Christmas lights, from 7 November to 6 January, these become €16 and €18 respectively; also check opening days for that period. At the Giardini di Villa Melzi, the published individual ticket costs €10; children up to 11 enter free. Checked on 16/10/2026. These are per-person prices for those visits, not a daily budget. Accommodation depends on village, hillside position and date; request the room total, occupancy, cancellation terms and any municipal tourist tax. Also check the coperto and what the meal includes.
Getting there and around

Arrival and airport
Malpensa (MXP) is a gateway to the region, but the final journey depends on your base. For Como Lago, use Trenord’s planner to find a connection via Saronno with a Malpensa Express that stops there. For Varenna, one option is to reach Milano Centrale and take the regional train to Varenna-Esino. Neither station nor quay is inside your hotel: check the final stretch, steps and night arrival.
Train and choice of shore
Milano Centrale–Varenna-Esino is a direct Trenord service: the page checked on 16/10/2026 reports about 64 minutes and 72 rail kilometres. This makes staying in Varenna without a car easier. Como Lago and Como San Giovanni are separate stations serving different connections; choose by address and onward journey, not merely the name Como.
Scheduled boats
Navigazione Laghi publishes period-specific timetables and distinguishes battelli, fast services and traghetti. Check outward and return sailings, working days and public holidays. Fast services have their own conditions and tickets; do not assume a circulation pass covers every vessel. The timetable valid from 4 October to 1 November 2026 should not be used for the following summer.
Roads, buses and walking
ASF buses connect western-shore localities, but route and stop must be checked for the trip. A car can help beyond the boat-served corridor; in the central circuit, parking and vehicle crossings add work. Do not walk along narrow roads without a shoulder to replace a missed connection. For accessibility, confirm boarding, steps and each villa’s route directly with the operator.
Safety
Use authorised swimming areas and check local notices; Italy’s Interior Ministry stresses separating swimmers from vessels. Do not jump from quays or boats. On wet trails and stairs, grippy footwear matters more than proximity to your hotel. Avoid road shortcuts on foot after missing transport. In stations and queues, keep luggage and documents under control. The European emergency number is 112.
Etiquette tips
In churches
Wear clothing suitable for a place of worship and pause tourist visits during services when asked.
In gardens
Stay on permitted paths and follow specific rules for animals, picnics and photography. A private residence visible from the park is not open to visitors.
When boarding
Let passengers disembark and confirm the destination before joining a queue; neighbouring quays may serve different routes.
Mistakes to avoid

Choosing Como while thinking of Varenna
Como stands at the end of one lake arm. If Bellagio and the central villas are your priority, assess connections and return journey times before booking a base.
Combining too many gardens
Balbianello, Carlotta and Melzi have different access and experiences. Visiting all on one day sacrifices walks, a meal and a buffer for boats.
Leaving the final crossing to sort out later
Confirm the return in the timetable for your date and keep a viable alternative. Do not count on a water taxi as an automatic extension of public transport.

Where to stay
- Varenna, between Olivedo and the centre · Visitors arriving by train who want three days in the central lake without a car.: Proximity to station and boats simplifies arrival and crossings. Check the exact address: a property advertised as Varenna may stand above the shore, with stairs, a road or a need for transfers.
- Bellagio, near harbour and centre · Visitors prioritising gardens, restaurants and promontory walks.: It lets you enjoy the village after some day visitors leave. Arrival depends on boat or road, and many streets have steps; checking luggage access is essential.
- Menaggio · Visitors combining the western shore with boats to other villages.: The harbour area helps with the central circuit and waterfront walks. There is no railway in town; arrange arrival by boat or bus and check the last connection.
- Como, centre and station areas · Visitors seeking urban heritage, restaurants and access to the southern arm.: A coherent choice outside the garden season or for exploring the town. For this guide’s central itinerary, distance by water requires reorganising days; it does not offer Varenna’s logistics.

Districts

Varenna
A compact centre on the eastern shore, with lanes, waterfront and Villa Monastero. The station is in Olivedo, outside the historic core.

Bellagio
A central promontory with stepped streets, shops and Villa Melzi’s gardens farther south. Pescallo occupies a bay on the other side of the point.

Menaggio
Harbour and waterside promenades on the western shore. An alternative for combining boats and buses, but it has no railway station.

Tremezzina
A municipality encompassing places such as Tremezzo, Lenno and Ossuccio. Villa Carlotta and Balbianello are in this sector, with different approaches.

Como
A town at the southwestern tip, with the Duomo, shopping streets, Rationalist heritage and the funicular to Brunate. It better suits visitors seeking urban life and the southern arm.
History
59 BCE · The Roman city beside the lake
Como’s refounding as Novum Comum strengthened links between the plain and Alpine routes. The lake was a transport corridor before becoming a holiday destination.
1396 · Work begins on Como Cathedral
Construction of the Duomo brought together different stages and styles over the centuries in the historic centre near the harbour.
16th–19th centuries · Silk and summer residences
Silk became important in Como and was industrialised in the 19th century. Meanwhile, wealthy families transformed lakeside properties into residences with parks.
1894 · The connection with Brunate
The opening of the Como–Brunate funicular improved access to the upper slope alongside tourism’s expansion.
1930s · Rationalism in Como
Giuseppe Terragni designed the Casa del Fascio as the Fascist Party headquarters. The building remains an architectural reference and also requires an understanding of its political context.
Complete history
The lake as a route
The arrangement of harbours and settlements helps explain Lario before tourism: water connected places separated by difficult slopes. Como linked to the plain, while the northern arm pointed towards Alpine passes. This organisation remains apparent in the importance of boats for visitors.
Houses, gardens and industry
The villas do not all date from the same period or offer the same visit. The Giardini di Villa Melzi were created in the early 19th century; Villa Carlotta combines an art collection with a botanical park; Balbianello preserves collections associated with its owners. In Como, silk’s industrial history offers a counterpoint to lakeside leisure.
A 20th-century city
Near the Duomo, the former Casa del Fascio presents Terragni’s Rationalist architecture. Its geometry interests followers of modern architecture without erasing that it was conceived for the Fascist regime’s organisation. The façade can be part of a walk; the interior requires authorisation.
Geography and shape of the city

Three arms
The lake is shaped like an inverted Y. Como lies at the southwestern end, Lecco in the southeast and Colico in the north. Bellagio occupies the point separating the southern arms; Varenna stands on the eastern shore and Menaggio on the western.
Regional scale
The central lake forms a practical group for short crossings. Como is not a neighbourhood within it: reaching the central villas from there requires different planning by boat or road. Old centres have steps and slopes; proximity to the lake does not guarantee level access to your accommodation.
I would use train and boat for this itinerary. I would rent a car only if the trip includes places beyond that corridor and after checking parking.
Culture
Silk and design
Silk production is central to Como’s history. The Silk Museum documents machinery and stages of work, helping explain the relationship between industry, textiles and fashion design.
Literature on the Lecco arm
The Betrothed, by Alessandro Manzoni, is partly set around Lecco. The Manzoni itinerary distinguishes places associated with the author’s biography from sites linked to the novel; the latter should not be treated as evidence of historical characters.
Music in the villas
Chamber concerts use lakeside residences and historic spaces. Programmes vary by edition and venue; admission to visit a villa does not confirm access to a concert.
The third-day choice depends more on interest in a residence and promontory or art and botany than on trying to tick both off a list.
Festivals and events
Festival Musica sull’Acqua
A music festival with events in lakeside localities. The 2026 edition ran from 3 to 26 July; check the next edition’s calendar and each concert’s municipality before choosing accommodation.
LakeComo International Music Festival
A concert season in different historic venues. The official programme is organised by event and place, without a single weekend applying to every year.
Books and films
The Betrothed, Alessandro Manzoni
Reading it helps recognise the Lecco arm as a social and literary setting beyond landscape. The novel is not a factual guide to buildings currently open to visitors.
Como Silk Museum
The collections and machines document an activity connecting the city with textile design and industrial production. They complement reading and offer a visit for a day in Como.
Frequently asked questions
Lake Como: How many days should I allow?
I would reserve three days, with two or three nights in Varenna depending on arrival and departure times: one day for the village and Villa Monastero, another for Bellagio and Melzi, and a third to choose Balbianello or Carlotta. This allows walks, lunch and boat waits without rushing through villas in sequence. A day trip from Milan shows part of the lake but does not replace these three days. For Como, Brunate or longer walks, add time and reorganise the base; I would not force them into this itinerary.
Lake Como: Should I base myself in Varenna or Como?
Varenna, between Olivedo and the centre, suits arrivals by train and three days in the central lake without a car. Check the address: accommodation may stand above the shore, with stairs, a road or a need for transfers. Como favours urban heritage, restaurants and the southern branch, including outside the garden season. For the central circuit, distance by water requires reorganising days; it does not offer Varenna’s logistics.
Lake Como: How do I arrive from Malpensa or Milan?
Malpensa (MXP) is a gateway to the region, but the final journey depends on your base. For Como Lago, use Trenord’s planner to find a connection via Saronno with a Malpensa Express that stops there. For Varenna, one option is to reach Milano Centrale and take the regional train to Varenna-Esino. Neither station nor quay is inside your hotel: check the final stretch, steps and night arrival.
Lake Como: How should I organise travel around the lake?
Navigazione Laghi publishes period-specific timetables and distinguishes battelli, fast services and traghetti. Check outward and return sailings, working days and public holidays. Fast services have their own conditions and tickets; do not assume a circulation pass covers every vessel. The timetable valid from 4 October to 1 November 2026 should not be used for the following summer.
Lake Como: What should I book and allow for Balbianello?
Lake Como: How should I compare visit and accommodation prices?
Lake Como: Do Melzi and Serbelloni offer the same visit?
The Villa Melzi gardens form a landscaped park in Bellagio, with trees, sculptures and lakeside paths. The ensemble was created between 1808 and 1810. Public visits cover the gardens and spaces specified by the operator; do not expect access to the private residence. According to information checked in October 2026, the standard ticket is bought at the entrance and does not require a reservation. By contrast, Villa Serbelloni’s park on Bellagio’s promontory offers lake views and a reading of landscape design on the Rockefeller Foundation estate. Public visits require booking and are guided in Italian or English. The local organisation gives around two hours, with the first hour uphill; consider effort and language comprehension before choosing. Confirm the place and visit option with the local organisation. Do not confuse this park with the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni or the Villa Melzi gardens. Choose according to your interests and return boat, rather than accumulating gardens as compulsory appointments.
Lake Como: When should I go for gardens and boats?
May, June and September are recommended for gardens and boats, accepting rain and busy weekends. Flowering varies with weather. July and August call for attention to bookings and queues. In April, check the spring calendar; in October, some villas’ hours and boat services decrease, and house and garden may open on different days. In winter, confirm each opening and consider Como or Lecco for urban life without assuming the summer offer.
Lake Como: Can I visit Villa Olmo?
The Neoclassical villa is a major landmark on Como’s waterfront. According to municipal information consulted in October 2026, the building was closed for restoration and the park only partly accessible. Plan around what is actually open, without relying on the interiors or a walk through the entire garden. The façade and lakeside position still help explain the monumental residences in the city; check notices and possible closures before walking there.
Lake Como: Can I combine the lake with Milan?
From Varenna-Esino, the direct train to Milano Centrale covers 72 rail kilometres in about 64 minutes according to Trenord. Give the city its own day and include the urban journey from the station. Anyone who visited before arriving at the lake need not repeat this as a day trip.
