Gramado
Lago Negro, Rua Coberta, café colonial and the Cascata do Caracol in Canela
Days Start with the basic programme and choose extensions for the time you have.
How the guide reaches this number
The first, on foot in the center of Gramado: Igreja Matriz, Rua Coberta, Palácio dos Festivais and Lago Negro, with the Belvedere Vale do Quilombo and a café colonial on Avenida das Hortênsias late in the afternoon. The second, in Canela: Parque do Caracol at opening, the Catedral de Pedra and, if the budget allows, the Skyglass in the afternoon, before it closes at 6 p.m. Two days are enough because the center is small, and what you gain by staying longer comes from outside the town. With a third day, I would go to the canyons of Cambará do Sul, the strongest landscape in the Serra, on a clear day. With a fourth, I would go to the Vale dos Vinhedos, preferably sleeping in Bento Gonçalves so as not to drive after the tastings. I would not build the trip around the paid parks: tickets run from R$108 to R$259 per adult, and the paid viewpoints in Canela show the same Cascata do Caracol from different angles, so one is enough. Snowland is only worth it for those who really want to see snow. At Natal Luz, I would book the hotel and the show well in advance and count on a crowded center.

When March to May and September: outside the winter holidays and Natal Luz, with hotels and tables less in demand; those who come for the cold choose June to August, and those who come for the lights, Natal Luz, run from October 22, 2026 to January 17, 2027
How the guide reaches this number
Gramado has a mountain climate with rain all year, about 2,100 mm, and the choice of dates depends more on crowds and prices than on the weather. In summer, the average high in January is 28 °C and the average low 17 °C. In winter, from June to August, July has average highs of 19 °C and lows of 8 °C, frost is frequent and the temperature sometimes falls below 0 °C; snow is rare and light, and it is not worth planning the trip around it.
Per person/day Add up lodging per night, meals per person and the tickets for the parks you choose; paid attractions and the Natal Luz season change the total a lot.
How the guide reaches this number
Per person per day: accommodation, meals, urban transport, visits and a small allowance for extras. Flights excluded; larger purchases vary. Editorial estimate, not a quote.

Behind this showcase is a colony of German and Italian families at the top of the range, at 830 m, which left behind the basalt stone church, the café colonial and a way of speaking with a trace of Hunsrik.

What makes the trip good is what lies around it. About 8 km away, Canela has the Cascata do Caracol, with its 131 m drop, and the Catedral de Pedra. Two hours away, the escarpment of the range opens into the canyons of Cambará do Sul, and on the other side lie the vineyards of Bento Gonçalves. The paid attractions weigh on the budget: the theme parks cost R$108 to R$259 per adult, but the lake, the covered street, the viewpoints and the cathedral are free.

How the year changes
Gramado has a mountain climate with rain all year, about 2,100 mm, and the choice of dates depends more on crowds and prices than on the weather. In summer, the average high in January is 28 °C and the average low 17 °C. There are two high seasons. The first is winter, with the July school holidays and the Film Festival in August (August 12 to 22 in 2026). The second is Natal Luz, which in 2026 runs from October 22 to January 17, 2027. In those periods hotels, café colonial and shows need reservations.
For the town with less competition, March to May and September work well: outside those two seasons, with the attractions open. Check long holiday weekends and Easter, which brings the Chocofest. In any month, bring a coat for the evening and a plan for a rainy day, such as museums and the Palácio dos Festivais.
Nilo's tips
Choose one or two paid parks, not six
Adult tickets ran from R$108 to R$259 in the 2026 high season, and Gramado and Canela together have more than a dozen parks. I would choose by the group’s interest: Parque do Caracol for the waterfall, Mini Mundo for those traveling with children, Snowland only for those who really want to see snow. Compare the ticket office price with that of online sellers, who usually give a discount.
Make the café colonial your dinner
At about R$139 per person with the whole table served, the café colonial counts as a full meal. I would book just one for the trip, late in the afternoon, and not eat dinner afterward.
Get to Parque do Caracol at opening
The park opens at 9 a.m., and last entry is at 4:30 p.m. on weekdays and 5:30 p.m. on weekends. I would go at opening, to have the whole morning at the viewpoints, and leave the Catedral de Pedra for later, in the center of Canela, where entry is free.
At Natal Luz, use what is free before buying a show
The lighting of the lights at 8 p.m. (every night until January 10), the Vila de Natal at Praça das Etnias, the Parada de Natal on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 3 p.m. and the Rua Coberta stage cost nothing. The paid shows cost R$120 to R$520 at full price in October 2026. If I were buying one, I would choose by venue: Nativitaten is open-air, the Grande Desfile is covered.
Save the canyons for a clear day
Cambará do Sul is about 2 hours by car, and the view of Itaimbezinho depends on the canyon being visible. I would keep that day flexible and swap it with the Canela day if the forecast were closed in.

A park in Canela, about 12 km from Gramado by road, created as a state park in 1973 around the Cascata do Caracol, with a 131 m free fall. Reopened on May 24, 2025 after renovation, with the Observatório, the viewing tower 27 m high, restored and a new deck next to the Cascata do Moinho. It opens Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with last entry at 4:30 p.m., and on weekends and holidays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with last entry at 5:30 p.m. The Bilhete Caracol cost R$59.90 at the ticket office and R$49.90 online at the 2025 reopening; a June 2026 survey recorded R$114 for an adult in the high season, and the price varies by date and channel. Parking is charged separately (R$30 in 2025), as are the Corajoso, the Ousado and the Estação Sonho Vivo. Residents of Gramado and Canela do not pay.

If you stay longer
Day 3 · Cambará do Sul and the Itaimbezinho Canyon
Day trip
Cambará do Sul is about 113 km from Gramado, close to 2 hours by car, and the Itaimbezinho Canyon area, in Aparados da Serra National Park, created in 1959, is about 19 km beyond the town, another half hour. The canyon is about 5.8 km long with walls of about 600 m for most of its length. The Vértice and Cotovelo trails follow the rim; the Rio do Boi trail runs along the canyon floor, and the park has entrances in Cambará do Sul and in Praia Grande, in Santa Catarina. Citral has buses to Cambará, but to reach the canyon and return the same day, a car or a tour works better. Check the ticket, hours and access conditions on the park’s website before setting out, and choose a clear day.
Day 4 · Bento Gonçalves and the Vale dos Vinhedos
Day trip
Bento Gonçalves is about 99 km away, close to 2 hours by car. The Vale dos Vinhedos covers 82 km² between Bento, Garibaldi and Monte Belo do Sul, received the Indication of Origin in 2002 and has had a Denomination of Origin since 2012. You visit wineries with tastings along the RS-444. The Maria Fumaça steam train, operated by Giordani Turismo, covers 23 km between Bento Gonçalves, Garibaldi and Carlos Barbosa in about 1.5 hours; check days and prices with the operator. For those who drink at the tastings, a tour or an overnight stay in Bento avoids driving back over the range.
Food
Café colonial
The meal inherited from the German and Slavic colonies of southern Brazil, served as a generous table at a fixed price per person: homemade breads, cuca (a crumb-topped cake), cakes, chimia (fruit jam), butter, cheeses, cold cuts, sausage, coffee, milk and hot chocolate. In 2026, the larger houses in Gramado charged about R$139 per person, and the meal usually replaces dinner.
Fondue
The pot of melted cheese of Swiss origin, also served with meat and with chocolate, is one of the evening outings in Gramado. In 2026 prices per person ran from R$119 at a house in the center to R$245 for fuller versions, and there was a fondue dinner with a show for R$398.
Artisanal chocolate
Gramado has 19 chocolate factories, and the shops in the center sell bars, bonbons and hot chocolate. Easter becomes a festival of its own, the Chocofest, with a parade.
Galeto ao primo canto
Young chicken roasted over embers, a dish of Italian immigrants that was born in Caxias do Sul: the Galeteria Peccini, opened in 1931, is cited as the first to sell it. It comes with fried polenta, radicchio salad and pasta, and is eaten at galeterias in the Serra.
Wine and sparkling wine of the Serra
The Vale dos Vinhedos, between Bento Gonçalves, Garibaldi and Monte Belo do Sul, has had a Denomination of Origin since 2012, with Merlot as the emblematic red and Chardonnay as the main white. In Gramado these wines and sparkling wines appear on the menus of the fondue houses.
Chimarrão
An infusion of yerba mate in hot water, drunk from a gourd with a metal straw, a deeply rooted habit in Rio Grande do Sul. The water is recommended at around 70 °C, not boiling.

Where to begin
Downtown Gramado on foot and the café colonial

Start at 9 a.m. at the Igreja Matriz São Pedro, in basalt stone, and cross to Praça Major Nicoletti and Rua Coberta.
Canela: Cascata do Caracol and Catedral de Pedra

Leave Gramado before 9 a.m. and reach Parque do Caracol at opening, 15 to 20 minutes by car; allow two hours for the viewpoints and the Observatório.
Money

The currency is the real (R$). In Gramado, what weighs most on the budget is the sum of tickets and themed meals, more than transport. The prices below were collected in June 2026 and are for adults in the high season.
Parks and paid attractions: Mini Mundo R$108, Parque do Caracol R$114 (R$59.90 at the ticket office at the May 2025 reopening, parking extra), Bondinhos Canela R$120, Dreamland Wax Museum R$120, Skyglass Canela R$165, Mundo a Vapor R$179, Snowland R$259. Online ticket sellers in the region usually offer a discount on these amounts; compare before buying at the ticket office. Free: Rua Coberta, Lago Negro, Igreja Matriz São Pedro, Belvedere Vale do Quilombo and Catedral de Pedra.
Food: café colonial about R$139 per person; fondue from R$119 to R$245 per person, and a fondue dinner with a show R$398; the cheapest café colonial in the survey cost R$80. Lodging: the survey’s examples started at R$254 a night in a budget hotel, R$515 in a family hotel, R$983 in a romantic hotel and R$1,620 in a luxury hotel. During Natal Luz, the July holidays and the film festival, compare rates for your dates well in advance. Natal Luz shows in October 2026: R$120 to R$520 at full price, with half-price tickets as provided by law.
Pix is a payment by transfer that requires an account at a participating institution; a QR code at the counter does not guarantee that a foreign card or account can pay. Ask about accepted payment methods and check the amount on the machine before tapping your card. On a restaurant bill, check whether service is included before adding a tip.
Getting there and around

Getting there: Porto Alegre, about 110 km away
The main airport is Salgado Filho (POA), in Porto Alegre, about 110 km from Gramado, close to 2 hours by car without traffic. Citral runs regular lines from Salgado Filho Airport to Gramado, Canela and other towns in the Serra; in June 2026 the bus fare from Porto Alegre to Gramado started at R$84.85, the shared transfer at R$134.50 and the ride-hailing fare at R$252. Check the schedules on the Citral website. The Caxias do Sul airport (CXJ), about 65 km away, has flights to São Paulo and Rio; in October 2026 it came under Infraero management. The Canela airport, 8 km away, has a 1,260 m runway for small planes and no regular commercial flight has been announced.
Within Gramado: on foot
The center is done on foot: Rua Coberta, Igreja Matriz, Palácio dos Festivais and Praça Major Nicoletti are a few minutes from one another, and Lago Negro is about 2 km from city hall, a 20 to 30 minute walk. Avenida das Hortênsias, Canela and the parks outside the center call for a taxi, ride-hailing app or car. During Natal Luz, the Parada de Natal takes over Borges de Medeiros on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 3 p.m.; plan car trips outside that time.
A car for the Serra
For the Cambará do Sul canyons and the Vale dos Vinhedos, a car gives freedom of schedule: in June 2026 rental started at R$119 a day. Cambará is about 113 km away and Bento Gonçalves about 99 km, each close to 2 hours by road. On a day of heavy rain, check road conditions with Defesa Civil and Daer before setting out: in May 2024 landslides closed streets in Gramado.
Safety
In Gramado, the main concern is pickpocketing in crowds: on Rua Coberta, on Borges de Medeiros during the parades and at the exit of the Natal Luz shows. Carry your bag in front of you at those moments and agree on a meeting point with your group.
The most concrete natural risk is heavy rain. In April and May 2024, landslides killed nine people in Gramado and Canela, led to the evacuation of risk areas in neighborhoods such as Piratini, Três Pinheiros and Bavária and closed streets in the town. On a rain alert day, follow Defesa Civil and check the highways before taking the road to Canela, Cambará or Porto Alegre. The mountain road has curves; drive slowly at night.
For water, prefer bottled or filtered, as everywhere in the country. Emergencies: 190 for the police, 192 for urgent medical care (Samu).
Etiquette tips

Café colonial is charged per person
The price is charged for each person seated and covers the whole table. Anyone who wants just a coffee with cake looks for a pastry shop in the center.
Outdoor shows call for a coat and arriving early
Nativitaten takes place in the open air over the water, at Serra Park, and the organizers recommend warm clothing even in the VIP section, which is uncovered, and arriving early. The Grande Desfile, at ExpoGramado, is covered.
A church is a parish, not just a postcard
The Igreja Matriz São Pedro and the Catedral de Pedra, in Canela, are active parishes. During Mass, enter quietly and leave the photo for later.
Mistakes to avoid

Buying a ticket for each park without doing the math
With tickets from R$108 to R$259 per adult, three parks in a day cost from about R$340 to more than R$550 per person. Choose first what interests the group and compare the ticket office price with that of online sellers, who usually give a discount.
Seeing the same waterfall three times
Parque do Caracol, Parque Bondinhos Canela and other paid viewpoints show the same Cascata do Caracol from different angles. For most people, one ticket is enough.
Thinking Canela can be done on foot from Gramado
The centers are about 8 km apart, and Parque do Caracol is about 12 km from Gramado by road; the Skyglass is 14 km beyond the center of Canela. Book a taxi, ride-hailing app or car.
Leaving the booking for arrival in high season
In July, during the August festival and at Natal Luz, hotels, café colonial, fondue with a show and shows sell out. Book ahead and check the section and the time printed on the ticket.
Fitting Cambará and Bento into the same day
The Cambará do Sul canyons and the Vale dos Vinhedos are in opposite directions, about 2 hours by road each. They are separate days.

East of the center, where the Aldeia do Papai Noel is, in Parque Knorr. A mix of residents’ homes and lodging a short walk from Borges de Medeiros.
Avenida das Hortênsias
The avenue that links Gramado to Canela, passing through the Carniel neighborhood. It concentrates the café colonial houses, larger hotels and the Vale do Quilombo viewpoint. Some stretches can be walked from the center, but most of it calls for a car, taxi or ride-hailing app.

Linha Carazal and RS-235
A rural area west of the center, on the road to Nova Petrópolis, where Snowland is. You get there by car or ride-hailing app.

Canela
The neighboring municipality, about 8 km along Avenida das Hortênsias, with the Catedral de Pedra in the center and, to the north, Parque do Caracol, Parque Bondinhos Canela and, 14 km from the center of Canela, the Skyglass. It works as a base for those who put these attractions first.
History
18th–19th c. · Kaingang territory and drovers’ trail
The Serra was Kaingang territory. Drovers of Azorean origin passed along the top of the range with their cattle and stopped to rest in a green field, one of the explanations for the name Gramado (“grassy”).
around 1875 · The first ranch
Tristão José Francisco de Oliveira settles in the place, and in the late 19th and early 20th centuries colonists of German and Italian origin arrive, along with Portuguese, Syrian and Lebanese families in smaller numbers.
1917–1943 · The chapel that became a stone church
The Catholic community builds a wooden chapel in 1917; about 26 years later it is rebuilt in basalt stone and becomes the Igreja Matriz São Pedro, in the center.
1922–1963 · The Linha de Canela train
The Rio Grande do Sul railway company’s line links São Leopoldo to Canela, passing through Gramado. Shut down in 1963, it leaves behind the old station, which becomes the bus terminal.
1953 · Lago Negro is born
On land burned in 1942, Leopoldo Rosenfeld dams the water and replants the shore with pine trees, aiming for the look of a European lake.
1954 · Separation from Taquara
State Law 2,522, of December 15, 1954, creates the municipality of Gramado, until then part of Taquara.
1973 · The first film festival
From January 10 to 14, 1973, the 1st Festival do Cinema Brasileiro de Gramado takes place at the old Cine Embaixador, which would later be enlarged and renamed Palácio dos Festivais. From the 1990s on, the festival settles into August.
1986 · The first Natal Luz
To fill the town in December, then the low season, the city government creates Natal Luz, opened with a concert by the Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra conducted by Eleazar de Carvalho.
2024 · The May rains
In the last days of April and the first days of May, the Inmet station in Canela records 466 mm of rain in one week. A landslide on Linha Pedras Brancas kills residents in Gramado, and the two towns add up to nine dead and more than 600 people out of their homes. The city government declares a public calamity, and Porto Alegre airport stays closed until October 21.
2025–2026 · The longest Christmas
In December 2025, at its 40th edition, Guinness recognizes Natal Luz as the longest Christmas festival in the world. The 41st edition runs 88 days, from October 22, 2026 to January 17, 2027.
Complete history
From drovers’ trail to colony
Before it was a town, the top of the range was a passage. The territory was Kaingang, and in the 18th and 19th centuries drovers of Azorean origin led cattle between the coast and the fields above the range, stopping in an open field that gave the place its name. The first known ranch, belonging to Tristão José Francisco de Oliveira, dates from around 1875. Then came colonists of German and Italian origin, who opened farms, sawmills and small industries. That layer is where today’s visitor finds what they recognize: the German-inspired architecture of the center, the Igreja Matriz São Pedro in basalt stone and the café colonial table.
The train, the lake and independence
The Linha de Canela railway arrived in 1922 and linked the range to São Leopoldo and the Rio dos Sinos valley until 1963. In that period the village stopped being only farmland: in 1953 Leopoldo Rosenfeld dammed the water of a valley burned in 1942 and created Lago Negro, with pine trees on the shore, and the following year Gramado separated from Taquara.
The events that created the season
Two events turned a summer-resort town into a year-round destination. The film festival, born in 1973 out of showings tied to the Festa das Hortênsias, settled into August in the 1990s and put the Palácio dos Festivais and the Kikito trophy at the center of the town’s image. Natal Luz, created in 1986 to fill December, then an empty month, grew to 88 days of programming and large-scale paid shows, such as Nativitaten and the Grande Desfile de Natal. Around them came theme parks, wax and car museums, chocolate factories and event centers such as Serra Park and ExpoGramado.
The 2024 rains
Between April 29 and May 5, 2024, the automatic Inmet station in Canela measured 466 mm of rain, about three times the average for a whole month. In Gramado, a landslide on Linha Pedras Brancas caused deaths, and the two towns together counted nine dead. More than 600 people left their homes, some unable to return because their houses collapsed or were condemned; neighborhoods such as Três Pinheiros and Piratini had homes evacuated, and at least five streets in the town were closed. The city government declared a public calamity. Tourism, on which the town depends, stopped with it: Porto Alegre airport stayed flooded until October 21, and on May 23 the mayor counted 300 hotels and 250 restaurants closed. Recovery came with the return of flights and with that year’s Natal Luz.
Natal Luz was born in 1986 to fill Gramado in December, until then the low season.
Geography and shape of the city

The top of the range
Gramado sits on the plateau at the edge of the Serra Gaúcha, at 830 m above sea level, in northeastern Rio Grande do Sul. The town is up high, and around it the terrain drops into deep valleys, such as the Vale do Quilombo, which can be seen from a viewpoint on Avenida das Hortênsias. The same escarpment forms, farther east, the canyons of Cambará do Sul, and to the north, in Canela, the Cascata do Caracol, with a 131 m free fall.
The center and the avenue to Canela
The center is organized around Avenida Borges de Medeiros, with the Palácio dos Festivais, the Igreja Matriz São Pedro, Praça Major Nicoletti and Rua Coberta a few steps from one another. Lago Negro is in the Planalto neighborhood, about 2 km from city hall, a 20 to 30 minute walk. To the east, Avenida das Hortênsias concentrates café colonial houses, hotels and shops and continues to Canela, about 8 km center to center. Larger parks, such as Snowland, are on the RS-235, outside the center.
Mountain climate, with rain all year
The climate is humid temperate (Cfb). In January, the average high is 28 °C and the average low 17 °C; in July, 19 °C and 8 °C. It rains all year, about 2,100 mm a year, with no dry season. In winter frost is frequent and the temperature sometimes drops below 0 °C; snow is rare and, when it falls, is usually light.
Lago Negro is artificial: it was dammed in 1953 on land that had burned in 1942.
Culture
The festival and the Kikito
The Gramado Film Festival is one of the oldest in Brazil: the first edition ran from January 10 to 14, 1973, and since the 1990s it has been held in August at the Palácio dos Festivais. The prize is the Kikito, a trophy that became a symbol of the town. The 54th edition ran from August 12 to 22, 2026, and tickets are sold through the festival’s official website. The Museu do Festival is next to the Palácio.
Immigration, the Rota Romântica and the table
Gramado and Canela are part of the Rota Romântica, a route of 14 municipalities and about 184 km between São Leopoldo and São Francisco de Paula, first settled by German immigrants in the first half of the 19th century. The heritage shows in the architecture, the food and the speech, influenced by Hunsrik. The Italian heritage arrives through the table of the Serra, with galeto and wine, and the Festa da Colônia is the festival that brings together the Azorean, German and Italian origins of the town.
A town organized for the visitor
Gramado had about 26,000 hotel beds in October 2024, and has more than 200 restaurants, 19 chocolate factories and more than a hundred furniture factories, and the event centers Serra Park and ExpoGramado add up to 35,000 m². Natal Luz, organized by Gramadotur, is the biggest expression of this: 88 days, hundreds of free attractions in the center and large-scale paid shows.

Books and films
O Quatrilho (1985), José Clemente Pozenato, and the film by Fábio Barreto (1995)
The story of two couples of Italian immigrants who share a house in a colony in Rio Grande do Sul around 1910. The film, shot in Bento Gonçalves, Carlos Barbosa, Caxias do Sul, Farroupilha and Antônio Prado, was nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1996 and shows the Serra where galeto and wine come from.
Videiras de Cristal, Luiz Antonio de Assis Brasil, and A Paixão de Jacobina (2002)
The novel and the Fábio Barreto film tell of the Muckers revolt, in the 1870s, around Jacobina Mentz Maurer, a German immigrant who said she received messages from Christ. They help in understanding the German colonization of the slope of the Serra Gaúcha.
Frequently asked questions
Gramado: How do you get from the Porto Alegre airport to town?
Citral runs regular lines from Salgado Filho Airport to Gramado; in June 2026 the bus fare started at R$84.85, the shared transfer at R$134.50 and the ride-hailing fare at R$252.
Gramado: How many days should you stay?
Two days: one on foot in the center of Gramado and another in Canela. Two days are enough because the center is small, and what you gain by staying longer comes from outside the town, like the canyons of Cambará do Sul and the Vale dos Vinhedos.
Gramado: How long does the day trip to the Cambará do Sul canyons take?
Cambará do Sul is about 113 km away, close to 2 hours by car, and the Itaimbezinho Canyon area is about 19 km beyond the town, another half hour. To reach the canyon and return the same day, a car or a tour works better than the bus.
Gramado: When is the best time to go?
March to May and September, outside the winter holidays and Natal Luz, with hotels and tables less in demand. Those who come for the cold choose June to August, and those who come for the lights, Natal Luz, from October 22, 2026 to January 17, 2027.
Gramado: Can you walk to Canela?
No: the centers are about 8 km apart, and Parque do Caracol is about 12 km from Gramado by road. Book a taxi, ride-hailing app or car.
